His cooperation with Berzelius led to the discovery of the new element cerium in 1804. He published several works on geology, one of the most important being "Anteckningar i physik och geognosi under resor uti Sverige och Norrige". He donated his considerable collections to the Swedish Academy of Sciences. Thor August Odencrants (1782-1829) punlished several parish descriptions in "Jönköpings hushålls-sällskaps handlingar", of which he was also the editor.
