Der Stecher und Illustrator William Greatbach (auch Greatbatch, 1802 Stoke-on-Trent/Staffordshire - 1894 London) wurde besonders durch seine Stiche nach alten Meistern bekannt, die auch vielfach in beliebten Almanachen erschienen. Vorliege…nder Stich nach dem Gemälde von Edward Matthew Ward (1816-1879), Mitglied der Royal Academy. Das Bild zeigt den irischen Dichter Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) die Querflöte spielend im Kreis von Zuhörern. Er spielt hier eine sogenannte "deutsche Flöte", die im späten 17. Jahrhundert in Frankreich aus mittelalterlichen Formen entwickelt wurde und um 1710 nach Irland gelangte. Sie wurde bei Laienmusikern in der traditionellen irischen Musik verwendet und Goldsmith gehörte zu den frühen Spielern des Instruments. Eine Flöte dieses Typs, die ihm angeblich gehört hat, befindet sich im Besitz des Irish Traditional Music Archive. Sprache: de.
