Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a thorough understanding of the immense effort undertaken by institutions and individuals across Britain to aid soldiers who had been blinded during the Great War. A major contributor in this endeavor was St. Dunstan's, a large facility in London established by Sir Arthur Pearson. This institution housed and trained blinded soldiers, providing them with skills and support to become active and independent members of society. The facility offered training in a wide range of trades and encouraged the development of new skills for the men beyond what was typically taught in similar organizations. The author details this history and the significant contributions these facilities made, giving context to the wider social changes and advancements in the treatment of soldiers with disabilities during the 20th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Walpole, N.H., 1802. 2 vols. in 1. 1st Am. ed. Ilustrador. First Edition. Walpole, N.H., 1802. 2 vols. in 1. 1st Am. ed. The First Treatise on Contracts Printed in America: The 1802 Walpole Imprint Powell, John Joseph [1755?-1801]. Essay Upon the Law of Contracts and Agreements. Walpole, N.H.: Printed at the Press of Thomas & Thomas, by David Newhall, 1802. Two volumes in one book, each with separate title page; star-paged throughout. Octavo (8" x 5"; 20.5 x 12.5 cm). Contemporary sheep, blind rules to boards, blind fillets, original gilt-lettered spine label, and blind tooling to board edges. Light rubbing and a few superficial scratches to boards; an unusually well-preserved example. Moderate, even toning consistent with the period; negligible foxing. Contemporary ownership signature "J Butterfield" to title page. An exceptional, unsophisticated copy in original condition. $1,500. * First American edition of the first treatise devoted exclusively to contract law. Originally published in London in 1790, Powell's work marked a decisive shift away from abridgments and digests toward a systematic exposition of legal principles. This Walpole edition retains the original star-paging, enabling precise citation to the English edition and facilitating transatlantic use by the early American bar. As Holdsworth notes, it is "an able book," notable for its clear statement of principle illustrated through carefully selected cases. A foundational work in Anglo-American contract law and a cornerstone for collections of early American legal printing and the development of the common law in the early Republic. The previous owner of this copy could quite possibly be Justin Butterfield (1790-1855), who read law in the office of Egbert Ten Eyck in Watertown, NY, and at the age 22 he was admitted to the bar. He served as commissioner of the General Land Office of the United States from 1849-1852, obtaining the position by beating out his opponent, a considerably younger and somewhat less experienced man named Abraham Lincoln. Holdsworth, A History of English Law XII:392. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 3661.

Bynkershoek was a renowned Dutch jurist who founded the positive school of international law, which held that usage and practice were more important than doctrines drawn from natural law. His works are still consulted today. First published in 1719, Opuscula, an essay collection on Roman law, addresses topics in maritime and international relations, the legal rights of unwanted and abandoned children, abortion and infanticide. The essays on children reflect Bynkershoek's debate on this topic with his distinguished contemporary Gerard Noodt [1647-1725]. The notoriety of this exchange, which became acrid and lasted several years, did much to promote their circulation. First published in 1710, Observationum, a summation of his studies on Roman civil and criminal law, was a standard reference in Dutch universities until the nineteenth century. Heineccius, the editor of the present edition, was a prominent German jurist and a professor of jurisprudence and philosophy at Halle. A companion volume was issued in 1733.
