Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: G+. 1st Edition. (1950). First Edition, small 4to, xii, 419pp, index, illustrated with numerous facsimile pages. Light wear, else G+. From the Foreword:"The James F. Bell collection of Americana, of which this is a catalogue, consists primarily of fundamental accounts of the discoveries of America, the later discoveries and explorations of eastern and central Canada, the Red River and Upper Mississippi Valleys and the Great Lakes Region adjacent to them, and the voyages and expeditions in search of a Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean by way of Hudson Bay. The most important single group of books in the collection is that of original editions of the Jesuit Relations, which were issued in an annual series from 1632 to 1672, with publication dates from 1632 to 1673 inclusive. As is well known these Relations de ce qui s'est passe en la Nouvelle France were annual reports from the Superiors of the Jesuit Missions in Canada to the Provincials of the order in France. In addition to their distinctly religious portions, they include much first-hand information about the natural resources of the regions described as centers of missionary work; the manners, customs, and language of the Indians; the incessant intertribal wars of the Iroquois and the Canadian Indians; and the zeal and tribulations of the missionary priests. Occasional comments on relations with the English colonies in New England and the Dutch colonies of New York add to the value of the reports as source books for the early history of the areas under consideration.".…
