Binding is quite edgeworn and scuffed (mainly at spine and corners) yet strong-hinged; original decorative pastedown portions of endpapers present and nice, with front/r…ear flyleaf portions lacking; most of text block tight and attractive, with first half dozen numbered leaves showing early paper mends to bottom and outer margins; lacks eight leaves (1-2, 15-16, 19-20, 21-22, 23-24, 25-26, 27-28, 29-30); 19th c. bookplate of Dominican academy on front pastedown and miniscule inkstamped convent at bottom of title page. A decent and quite handleable copy, entirely in Latin and printed in black and red, of this (roughly translated) "Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary According to the Rite of the Sacred Order of the Friars Preachers" -- a Catholic devotional book devoted to Mary and shorter version of the "Divine Office," with daily prayers, scripture, psalms, hymns and other readings. This particular version is connected to Baltasar de Quiñones (1733-98), a Dominican cleric from Spain named Master of the Order of Preachers (1777-98). Despite flaws, a presentable example in original binding.

Schedi (engraver), 3 engraved initials, numerous red-printed woodcut initials. Occasional light browning. 18th-century Roman(?) gold-tooled red goatskin, covers with densely tooled dentelle border built up from leafy plant tools, sprigs, floral and arabesque tools, each cornerpiece enclosing a grid with gold dots, blossom tools and dots in central field, ornamental centerpiece of large foliate, arabesque and dandelion tools, spine in six uniformly gold-tooled compartments, block-printed pastedown endpapers with flower and fruit design stencil-colored in red, green and yellow, gilt edges with gauffred border design; upper cover a bit faded and bowed, corner bumped, a couple of scrapes to lower cover. Provenance: Horace de Landau (1824-1904), bookplate, shelfmark no 47854; Vicomte de Cossette, armorial bookplate.*** A rococo binding on a luxuriously printed and illustrated Office of the Virgin, from the Salvioni press, official printers to the Vatican. The Salvioni press used several workshops, sometimes collectively mislabeled as the "Vatican" or "Salvioni" bindery. Those bound for the papal library were finely executed, and different binderies can be identified by their tools, color of leather, and stylistic details. The present pretty but crowded binding decor, with its in places overlapping tooling, does not seem to belong to the corpus of binderies represented in, for example, the Vatican Library's 1977 exhibit catalogue of papal bindings. Stylistically it uses types of tools and decoration - the wide "Louis XV" style border, and the basketweave cornerpieces - in vogue during the reigns of Clement XIV (1769-1774) and Pius VI (1775-1799). Its decoration is similar, for example, to binding no. 262 in Legature papali, but it is of inferior workmanship, and does not use the same tools. It was probably produced in a Roman shop executing many commissions and forced to work quickly, although it could even be a provincial binding. Cf. Slightly later eighteenth-century Roman gold-tooled red goatskin, covers with large dentelle border composed of a triple neo-classical roll-tooled outer frame enclosing six large ornaments each with a basketweave design of diagonally crossing gilt fillets framed in volutes and leafy sprigs, a few tiny petal or star tools, board edges protected with a probably later frame of silver or silver-plated metal discreetly nailed to the binding, two elaborately chased silver fore-edge clasps and catches, spine in six uniformly gold-tooled compartments, gilt edges with gauffred border design, pair of green ribbon page markers, marbled endpapers; 20th-century black morocco felt-lined case. Provenance: with Gumuchian, Catalogue XII/1930/225; Maurice Burrus, bookplate, purchased from Gumuchian in 1934, purchase notes at end. Astriking rococo binding, in fine condition, on a luxuriously printed and illustrated Office of the Virgin, from the official Vatican press. From the mid- to late eighteenth century, the Salvioni press used one or more bookbinding workshops that produced finely gold-tooled bindings for their Vatican publications. Although often referred to as the ?Salvioni bindery,? this appellation is circumstantial: ?the Salvioni firm was responsible for promoting the bindings, but it is not known which workshop produced them? (British Library Database of Bookbindings). Some of these ?Vatican? bindings incorporated variously colored or mottled leather. This example, with its basketweave cartouches, relies purely on tooling for its effect. An example evidently from the same workshop, on a book printed at Rome in 1791 by Salomini, using analogous cartouches as corner-pieces as well as a similar ?spiraling? border design and some of the same leafy spray and star tools, is reproduced in Legature papali, no. 264. ?Whereas the . more flamboyant bindings produced by the Salvioni Bindery rely frequently on polychrome enamel heightening, these Vatican bindings strike a somewhat more sober note with their very fine dark-red morocco and rich gold-tooling of high quality? Rubrics in red, one three-line initial in blue filled with foliage on burnished gold ground, verso with panel border of colorful flowers, a vase, and acanthus, recto with A MINIATURE OF THE VIRGIN AND CHILD flanked by two angels, framed by… gold and painted bars on three sides and A FULL BORDER of acanthus, flowers, a vase, and gold bezants. Minor soiling to vellum, but in excellent condition, the miniature especially well preserved. This especially intimate and tender scene shows the so-called Virgo Lactans (or Nursing Madonna), the Virgin suckling the infant Christ; it accompanies the text for "Obsecro te," a popular Marian prayer appealing to the Virgin for protection and intercession. The prayer is not always accompanied by a miniature, and the present illustration, being rather large and skillfully done, is a particularly appealing example. The Virgin's facial features are especially excellent, with beautiful molding and shading that give her visage deep complexity and emotional resonance. The use of gold in this miniature adds to its richness; delicately highlighted garments, tresses, and angel wings catch the light and seem to shimmer as one moves the page. The high-quality illumination, liberal use of gold, and robust borders all suggest that the original manuscript must have been the product of an accomplished workshop.

Very minor wrinkling to vellum, but the leaf IN LOVELY CONDITION, with the gold everywhere gleaming brightly. From a luxuriously appointed Book of Hours, this leaf features a handsome miniature of the Coronation of the Virgin attributed to the workshop of Jean Pichore (fl. ca. 1502-20), a major figure among illuminators of the period and one of the most sought-after artists in France at the turn of the 16th century. Executed with imagination and delicacy, the miniature features the traditional subject associated with the hour of Compline, showing the Virgin being crowned Queen of Heaven, following her Death and Assumption. The composition here is quite intimate, with the Virgin kneeling before her son as she accepts, with humility, the crown he lays upon her head. Christ is depicted barefoot and slightly bowed toward his mother in a gentle display of respect. The artist creates a wonderful backdrop for this scene, composed entirely of seraphim painted gold, blue, light pink, and green, closely packed together. Two of the seraphim hold up light pink draperies behind the central figures, as if to shield this tender moment from prying eyes. The borders here are a source of delight, featuring a figure wearing a jester-like cap and playing the bagpipe as well as a creature with the body of a bird and the face of a human, donning a rather fashionable bycocket cap. The illumination here is of high quality, features a liberal use of gold, and contains unique marginal details, suggesting that the original manuscript must have been a costly commission for a wealthy patron.
