Margins variably but lightly toned, with a few minor surface creases, and with residue remaining from partially-removed single short & narrow white paper strips of width 5mm pasted down along 50mm of both left- & right-hand edges. Cluster of four light tan spots in right-hand margin, one of which just overlapping printed area; three further such spots confined to lower margin. Margins also with three tiny pin-holes - two close together towards upper left-hand corner, the other towards upper right-hand corner. Light rub-marks connecting three little bruises - one in upper margin, the other two close together and up to 20mm below upper edge of printed area but well above subject. The contents are very clean save for the lightest of foxing to the preliminaries. The sixteen coloured plates are quite splendid with one loose and unbound.The end-papers are spotted and darkened and the name of a previous owner is in ink to the head of the front free end-paper. The plate shows Sir Edward John PoynterÃ"ÃÃs ornamental scheme in full colour: a disciplined classical vocabulary arranged with the painterÃ"ÃÃs characteristic clarity, rhythm, and archaeological fastidiousness. PoynterÃ"ÃÃs decorative work of this period often balanced scholarly classicism with a modern sense of pattern and surface, and the Wortley Hall commission is a textbook instance Ã"Ãà a ceiling divided into formal compartments, enriched coves, and a frieze designed to harmonise with the proportions of the room. The accompanying doubleÃ"Ãæpage plain plate gives the measured geometry of the cove and centre panels, the sort of technical supplement The Building News routinely issued to show how the decorative scheme was constructed. PoynterÃ"ÃÃs interior designs form a small but distinguished part of his oeuvre. Better known for large mythological canvases and his later role as President of the Royal Academy, he nevertheless produced several notable decorative schemes for aristocratic houses, always marked by a disciplined classicism and a painterÃ"ÃÃs sensitivity to colour. His work at Wortley Hall reflects the Victorian belief that the decorative arts should be intellectually grounded Ã"Ãà ornament not as mere embellishment, but as a coherent extension of architectural form. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Limited Edition. A very good copy of the signed limited edition of Lohengrin in the original full decorative vellum binding. Illustrated throughout with motifs and designs, illustrations in black and white and greyscale/colour varying from vignettes to full size, and 8 mounted colour plates. Copy number 11/525 signed by the artist, Willy Pogany, on the limitation page. The binding has a gilt title and a gilt design on the front board and elaborate gilt lettering on the spine. It is slightly cocked to the front and the boards are slightly splayed at the outer edge. The decoration is bright. There is a 4 cm darker line close to, and parallel with, the front spine joint where the surface is slightly abraded and there are some small darker marks around it. The spine is a little darker at the top end. The back board has a small 1 cm circle of darker spots towards the top corner. Top page edges are gilted; the remainder are untrimmed and rough. Internally the contents are in near fine clean condition with the occasional small mark or spot. The original page marker is present. The work is unpaginated. A panel at the rear states that the work was printed using off-set lithography by Vincent Brookes, Day and Sons Ltd of London and that the 4 colour reproductions are the work of the Dux Engraving Co.
