The Communist Party of Palestine (PCP) was formed in 1923. Its membership at this time was Jewish after its Arab members left in 1943/4 to form the National Liberation League (NLL). Both were anti-Zionist and opposed partition, though months after the UN Partition Plan was passed in Nov 1947, they adopted the USSR's position and endorsed it. After the 1948 War they merged to form the Communist Party of Israel (Maki), and became part of the first Knesset in 1949. This document records PCP's contribution to public hearings UNSCOP hosted as part of its fact finding mission to Palestine during June-July 1947. Aimed at progressive Arab and Jewish circles in Palestine and democratic movements worldwide (Introduction), it contains the addresses given by Secretary Samuel Mikunis, Central Committee Member Dr W Ehrlich, and Secretary Meir Vilner, and a transcript of the following Q&A. PCP distinguishes its position from those of the Zionists and the Arab States, whom they criticise for seeking imperialist support. They call for the end of the Mandate and evacuation of the British Army and Police as necessary preconditions for an independent, democratic, bi-unitarian state, inhabited and governed by Jews and Arabs with equal rights. UNSCOP's opening questions seek to establish the extent of PCP support: "Our militant membership is 1,400. In addition, we have thousands of supporters". And its relations with the NLL: "In all basic problems of Palestine (we) are of the same opinion" (p46). Rare with Worldcat locating 6 institutions (National Library of Israel, Universitat J. C. The transcript of three addresses and Q&As delivered by three members of the Palestine Communist Party (Samuel Mikunis, Wolf Ehrlich, and Meir Vilner) to the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) in July of 1947. The UNSCOP had only been formed by the United Nations two months before, and was tasked with preparing a report on recommendations for Palestine and for the end of the British Mandate. Believing they would not be treated fairly under the UN, Arab states generally abstained from collaborating with UNSCOP. - Of the three speakers, Samuel Mikunis (1903-82) was the best known. At the time of the address he was the Secretary of the Communist Party of Palestine, and would go on to become a member of the Knesset from 1949 to 1974. - In its foreword, the editors of the text state that the publication "will not only be welcomed by progressive Arab and Jewish circles in Palestine. It will serve a useful purpose in providing democratic movements throughout the world with information about British colonial rule in Palestine and the struggle of the Jewish and Arab masses for freedom and independence". - Light toning and soiling, well preserved. - OCLC 173026825.
