This is the first book on freshwater fish and crustacean species found on Réunion Island. It is intended for naturalists, researchers, teachers or fishermen. It has been drawn up as a tool for administrators in charge of management and conservation of aquatic communities. The main features of the various aquatic habitats on Réunion are presented in the first part of the book, together with the species found in these habitats. Then comes the history of local ichthyology and species introductions, followed by the catalogue of all species found on the island, with 25 fish species and 10 decapod crustacean species. For each one, a data sheet gives a description of the animal, a commentary on its biology and ecology, as well as its distribution with a detailed map. This inventory of the freshwater environment of Guadeloupe has allowed the recording of 14 species of decapod crustaceans and 16 species of fish. Each is presented in a summary file (morphology, biology, distribution and threats) accompanied by a distribution map and a photograph. Two identification keys complement the descriptions. This work also deals with the different characteristics of the habitats in this archipelago: geology, topology, climate, hydrography, significance of the aquatic populations, threats to habitats and conservation. The freshwaters of the Comoros, Mascarenes and Seychelles (three archipelagos of the Western Indian Ocean) harbour a high biodiversity: 61 fish and 22 decapod crustacean species are known, 12 of which are endemic to this area of the world. Here is the first book dealing with all native or introduced freshwater fishes and crustaceans of New Caledonia. It is intended for naturalists, teachers, researchers, fishermen or aquarists. Its objective is also to be a tool for the managers in order to contribute to the conservation of aquatic communities. The biodiversity of Caledonian freshwaters is important: 64 fish species and 37 decapoda crustacean species are counted. Endemic freshwater species represent more than 24,8% in New Caledonia (17,2% for the fishes and 37,8% for the crustaceans). Various approaches are proposed to contribute to the identification of the species: keys, descriptive cards and vernacular names. The cards inform about description, biology, ecology and distribution of each species, particularly in the Pacific area, using more than 110 original photographies or drawings and as many detailed map.
