The seven stories in this book, all set in the southern counties of England, range in time form the first to the twentieth centuries. There is a ghost story in which the finding of a brooch leads a modern child into witnessing a Roman crime; there is a story of the Battle of Lewes, fought between Henry III and Simon de Montfort; and another telling of the terrifying adventures of a monk sent out from Lewes to gather taxes from a remote woodland village. All of them are first and foremost good stories, enrighed by a feeling for history and an eye for detail. Illustrated.

The content is clean with light toning. Light toning and faint foxing on the cut edges. A very usable book, in nice condition. The pictures are of the actual book. Anxious for the day when he can row out with the lifeboat crew, Jim is unhappy that the old boat is to be replaced with a powered one until he witnesses a shipwreck and nearly loses his father, during a storm. As a young girl the author Vera Gladys Cumberlege, witnessed this shipwreck when her family lived in Sussex. She was particularly pleased, when the illustrator Maurice Yardley, showed her some faded photographs of the Bembridge lifeboat, the lifeboat in the story.
