The present work stems from the First International Chariot Conference, held from 30 November to 2 December 2012, organized by the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo and the American University in Cairo. The conference aimed to assess the current understanding of chariots in Egypt and the Near East while providing a platform for discussion. It features a diverse range of papers, from broad overviews to detailed studies on specific topics, including philology, iconography, archaeology, engineering, history, and conservation. This compilation is valuable for scholars and anyone interested in ancient technology, transportation, or warfare. Dr. André J. Veldmeijer, Assistant Director for Egyptology at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo, has been an archaeologist in Egypt since 1995, specializing in leatherwork and footwear. He (co-) directs several projects, including the Ancient Egyptian Leatherwork Project and the Egyptian Museum Chariot Project. Dr. Salima Ikram, a Professor of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo, has been involved in archaeological work in Egypt since 1986, leading the Animal Mummy Project and co-directing various other initiatives. Both scholars have published extensively for diverse audiences.

The Coptic monastery and cemetery Deir el-Bachit stands on the hilltop of Dra' Abu el-Naga, the well-known necropolis in Qurna (West Bank, Luxor). It is the largest Coptic monastery complex preserved in Western Thebes and the first monastery that has been systematically investigated. The excavation of the monastery was started as a DFG-Project des Ägyptologischen Instituts der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Muenchen in close collaboration with the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut Abteilung Kairo. Until the start of the investigations in 2001 with a survey, little research was done. After three seasons of preliminary research, full archaeological research was started in 2004. The leatherwork was studied in 2007, the present volume of which presents the results. The book consists of two the analysis and a detailed catalogue, including colour images of all finds and, where necessary, line drawings. The finds are analysed within the framework of the excavation as well as within the frameworks of the Ancient Egyptian Leatherwork Project and the Ancient Egyptian Footwear Project (www.leatherandshoes.nl).

This volume describes, illustrates, and analysis the finds from the excavations at Dra Abu el-Naga, an important necropolis on the east bank of the Nile in Luxor (Egypt), which was in use from Middle Kingdom times until the early Christian era. Excavations of the site have been conducted by the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). A wide variety of leather objects or objects with leather parts have been discovered, including footwear, musical objects, loincloths as well as parts of furniture. The dating of these objects, mirroring the variety, ranges from Pharaonic to Ottoman. The present work describes these finds in detail, accompanied by colour photographs and drawings. The analysis includes the discussion of the provenance of the finds, the interpretation of the objects from a technological as well as typological point of view and dating.Dr. Andre J. He (co-)directs several projects, including the Ancient Egyptian Leatherwork Project, which encompasses the Egyptian Museum Chariot Project and the Tutankhamun's Sticks & Staves Project. Añadir al carritoThe tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered in 1922 in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor (Egypt) by Howard Carted, yielded over 5000 items. Among the vast number of richly embellished precious objects, such as the solid gold coffin and mask, were also more mundane objects, including the hitherto unpublished basketry objects. Baskets, the ?plastic bags? of the ancient world, were used for storage of all sorts of things, including food, clothing and jewellery, and many that were found in the tomb retained their original contents. The present work describes and illustrates the basketry and basketry boxes from the tomb in detail, giving attention to the technology, material, shape, decoration, as well as their contents. The analysis contextualises the basketry in a wider framework, comparing it with other examples and the visual record, with regard to the technology used to make them and their uses. The book will be of interest for those interested in basketry, ancient technology, daily life and burial customs in ancient Egypt and is written for a wide audience.

The majority of the finds are dated to periods well after the pharaonic era (4th century AD onwards), save for a few finds from the New Kingdom and the Middle Kingdom. The majority of finds are sandals and shoes. Most important for leatherwork/footwear studies, however, is the footwear from the Persian layers (6th-5th c. BC), which is distinctly different from ancient Egyptian leatherwork. Ample attention will be given to this important group.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - One hundred years ago, Howard Carter, working for Lord Carnarvon, made one of the most important archaeological discoveries of all times in the Valley of the Kings (Luxor, Egypt): the nearly intact tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun (ca. 1335-1325 BC). In addition to the king¿s body, the tomb contained well over 5000 objects, which were recovered, conserved and recorded by Carter and his team. The fabulous treasures, such as the gold coffins, funerary mask, jewellery, as well as the six near complete chariots are well known. The tomb, however, yielded a wide variety of objects, both sacred and secular, including some that are less elaborately decorated with precious materials but which are, from a scientific point of view, perhaps even more interesting (and enigmatic). Many objects from the tomb still remain unstudied. Those that have been published consist of specific groups, for example: thrones, chairs and stools; the bows; musical instruments; game boxes; the gold shrine or the stone vessels. This work examines the tomb and its contents through an unusual lens: leather and other animal-based soft tissue products that were used in creating some of the tomb¿s contents.Through a study of these artefacts, the reader is guided through the surprising and complex world of leatherworking in ancient Egypt, focussing on the numerous different leather objects from the tomb that are either made entirely from or include leather. These include chariots and their accoutrements, weapons, and gloves, as well as hitherto unpublished finds. This approach offers new insights in ancient Egyptian technology as well as in the production and use of specific materials and objects. The findings are discussed in the wider framework of the development and organisation of the leather industry in New Kingdom Egypt. The present work also includes chapters with suggestions about how to study archaeological leather and an update on leather use in the New Kingdom.Contents1. Introduction2. What is Leather and How to Make and Decorate it3. Working with Leather4. How to Research Leather5. Importance of Leather in Ancient Egypt6. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 312 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | The discovery of Tutankhamun¿s tomb by Howard Carter in 1922 is one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of all time. It took Carter and his team 10 years to clear the contents of the tomb and among the objects found was a large collection of shoes and sandals. The footwear is analysed here in detail for the first time since the discovery using Carter¿s records and Harry Burton¿s excellent photographs along with the author¿s analyses of the objects, all of which are housed in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo and the Luxor Museum. Several specialists contributed to the volume discussing the different materials (gold, vegetable fibre, birch bark, glass and faience, leather, gemstones) that were used in the footwear. Tutankhamun¿s footwear is compared with other finds in order to be able to put it in a broader context. The footwear from the tomb of Yuya and Tjuiu, the King¿s great-grandparents, are, therefore, analysed as well. In addition to the analysis, footwear in texts and two- and three-dimensional art is considered.
