De maritiem-historicus J.A. van der Kooij heeft voor de geïnteresseerde lezer een keuze gemaakt uit vele geschriften. In zijn selectie uit de bewaard gebleven dagboeken en reis- verslagen heeft hij getracht zoveel mogelijk facetten van het zeemansleven te laten herleven: de leerjaren, het dagelijks leven aan boord, de zee- manskunst, ervaringen tijdens de reis en in de vreemde haven, storm en aanvaring, kaperij enz. In de gekozen fragmenten laat de auteur de tijdgenoten zelf aan het woord, zodat het authentieke karakter bewaard blijft.
