During the middle and last half of the first millenium A.D., when the art of metal casting was mature, ancestors of a group of Finno-Ugric peoples of Western Siberia practised an æanimalÆ art of an essentially decorative character. Known objects of the Animal Style come mainly from numerous burial mounds of Perm region-notably cast bronze plaques and buckles. The animals represented are wild: formidable beasts or birds of prey, and game such as stags or elks, and occasionally reptiles. The animal figures would be emblems, some tribal, some cosmic. Such symbolic beasts are known in other arts. In this volume both the elaborate metalwork and other materials are represented showing a vigorous tradition of the style in folk art and crafts of later origin., Russian/ English captions & resume, Year1988, Illust.
