Paperback. Condición: New. Founded fifteen centuries ago by the legendary Gaelic king Fergus Mór mac Eirc, Dál Riada was a most unusual ancient kingdom. From the Antrim Glens and Rathlin Island up through Kintyre, Argyll and the Inner Hebrides to the Isle of Skye, it was inhabited by Gaelic seafaring warriors and Viking raiders.…With great skill and boundless courage, they navigated around the many islands and countless miles of treacherous coastline. They fought mighty battles, endured wild ocean storms and met with whirlpools and whales. Their presence still echoes in the old place names, and their stories of strange sea monsters, witches and otherworldly creatures have been passed down through the generations. In this collection, storyteller and folklorist Colin Urwin reimagines a few of the very best.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Old tales from the ancient kingdom that once encompassed the north-eastern corner of Ireland and the Inner Hebrides. The ancient Kingdom of Dal Riada stretched from County Antrim on the north-east coast of Hibernia up through the Hebrides to the Isle of Skye. Founded by the chieftain Fergus…Mor Fergus the Great fifteen centuries ago, Dal Riada was once a mighty sea-faring power. The kingdom was fought over by Gaelic Chieftains and marauding Vikings. At its heart was a monastery built on Iona by St Columba. From here Irish monks spread Christianity throughout Britannia. Generations of ordinary people lived and laughed and loved on a hundred different islands - Rathlin, Islay, Jura, Mull and Skye to name but a few. Their ghosts can still be heard in the stories told of selkies, sea monsters, faeries, ancient battles and heroic deeds. This is the first time that a collection of Dal Riata folklore has been put together. AUTHOR: Colin Urwin is from the Glens of Antrim in Northern Ireland and has been described as a modern-day Seanchai. He is best known as an authentic storyteller throughout Ireland and the UK, and appears at folk and storytelling festivals and conferences all over the world. 30 b/w illustrations The ancient Kingdom of Dal Riata stretched from County Antrim on the northeast coast of Hibernia up through the Hebrides to the Isle of Skye. The ghosts of the people that lived there can still be heard in the stories told of selkies, sea monsters, faeries, ancient battles and heroic deeds. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: New. Swept by strong ocean currents and ferocious storms, Rathlin Island is mysterious and hauntingly beautiful. Lying just six miles off the north coast of County Antrim, it is the most northerly inhabited island of Ireland. Once home to prehistoric hunter-gatherers, its inhabitants have endured Viking rai…ds, medieval massacres, famine and emigration. As farmers, fishermen and seafarers, they are resourceful, independent and proud - and they have always enjoyed a good story.Drawing on Irish and Scottish traditions, Rathlin has a rich folk heritage all its own. Much of it may have been lost but for one island man - Tommy Cecil. Best known for rescuing Sir Richard Branson after his hot-air balloon ditched into the sea off Rathlin, Cecil was also instrumental in saving many of the island's old stories. Taken from recordings held in the Ulster Folk Museum, this unique collection brings these stories to print for the first time.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. A collection of traditional folk tales from the rugged Irish coastline. Bound by the wild Atlantic Ocean to the north south and west, and to the east by the Irish Sea, there lies an ever-shifting borderland shared by eagles, otters, seals, dolphins and man. People have clung to the coast of…Ireland for millennia. Ancient ancestors left great stone monuments bewildering to modern imaginations, the ruins of countless castles still hold the power to stir the blood, and centuries-old lighthouses defy physics and invite awe. Men and women have lived, loved and died in this harsh but bountiful environment. And through it all they have told stories to explain the world around them, to entertain themselves and to expel despair. Little wonder that our richest folklore and stories come from the rugged coastline of this island. AUTHOR: Colin Urwin is a full-time professional storyteller, folk musician and singer-songwriter. He has appeared at hundreds of events and festivals all over Ireland, the UK, Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, and Australia.
