A small archive of works by Michele Andree Guy: "La France Contemporaine," in French, 9 leaves (208 x 270 mm), typed on the recto only and bound with a clasp at top corner; "Alphonse de Chateaubriant, Romancier," in French, 11 leaves (208 x 270 mm), typed on the recto only and staple-bound at the…top corner; and the translation into English of "Alphonse," 11 leaves (203 x 328 mm, lined paper), handwritten in black ink on the recto only, with corrections in ink and pencil, staple-bound at tope corner. All in excellent condition, some light wrinkling or flattened creases along the edges, nowhere infringing upon text. Alphonse de Chateaubriant was a prize-winning French novelist who became an ardent supporter of Nazism after a trip to Germany in 1935. The essay included here focuses on his writing (making no mention of his abhorent political beliefs), and a pencil notation indicates that it may have been a submission to the Bermondsey Book literary magazine, edited by Frederick Heath and published December 1923 to May 1930. However, we find no record of publication.

The first time Yossarian saw the chaplain he fell madly in love with him." signed by Heller in black ballpoint pen. Catch-22 is a satirical war novel by American author Joseph Heller. It is his debut novel. He began writing it in 1953, and the book was first published in 1961. Often cited as one of the most significant novels of the 20th century, it uses a distinctive non-chronological third-person omniscient narration, describing events from the points of view of different characters. The separate storylines are out of sequence so the timeline develops along with the plot. The novel satirizes military bureaucracy and greed. Condition: Some staining to cloth along top edge and at foot of spine. Jacket lightly rubbed with a few small tears along edges, some with tape repairs to reverse, small puncture to back panel at fold else very good in like jacket housed in custom orange-brown marbled cloth clamshell box. Inscription: "Presenté par Mme Francoise Guiter le 23rd Janvier 1995" on top edge of half title page. The 24 single side foolscap page biography was a proposed biography (or part) of the artist by this family member. It is typed out in English by Barbara Shuey, the text of the catalogue is bilingual in French & Danish. Slim folio. Unique association copy of this retrospective catalogue of her works held in Louisiana in 1988. John J Gibson was a senior art lecturer at the Courtauld and worked there in the 1980's-90's. *We can find no evidence this was ever published in this format later by her neice, perhaps shelved? or incorporated in some other retrospective work.

Green cloth, gilt lettering stamped on front cover (minor edgewear, rubbing), VG exemplar. An intriguing unpublished typescript manuscript of the American lab…or movement, focusing on the forces that effected the labor movement's growth, and analyzing those forces or factors. The author felt that not enough efforts had been made historically prior to World War II on applying the science of statistical analysis to labor unions, their membership, and the potential impacts on the economic life of the United States. In addition, he employs statistical analysis of the union membership by many different unions, trades, and occupations, in order to measure the strength of the labor movement, reducing dependence on the analysis of strike frequency, threats of strikes, elections, or other factors which can be indeterminate. Although he does draw upon the work of Barnett, "Growth of Labor Organization in the United States, 1897-1914," and Wolman "The Growth of American Trade Unions, 1880-1923," Current believed their numbers were flawed in the 19th Century, and includes a substantial statistical analysis of how he corrects those numbers, as well as those from other historical sources. Of additional interest are the two critical letters bound into the volume, with the first from famed Wisconsin labor historian Selig Perlman (1888-1959) which notes that Current "is entitled to credit for ingenuity, industry, and optimism. The valuable part of the manuscript is the statistical one. . . and full credit for debunking some of the loose estimates of membership at the peaks of 1836 and 1872." Perlman himself has received recently significant criticism regarding his racist views and limited understanding of the evolution of the labor movement which did not try to include race, status, ethnicity, or other sociological factors. Perlman's letter The second from W.D. Knight, notes that Current's study may impede on work underway for publication by Professor Moberly. Current (1923-2013), received his BA from the University of Wisconsin, later worked for Kennedy Economic Development in Oregon, and aided the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, wrote on the conditions of migrant workers in the Willamette Valley in the 1950s, and authored several works on philately and stamp cancels.

The leaf features questions and answers on Malcolm X's devotion to the Nation of Islam and how Muslim values drive his efforts to improve the lives of Black people.…Near fine condition with thin creases along edges. Signed by Malcolm X in pen at the bottom of the page, with a line in the left-hand margin indicating his approval of the contents. Includes the full published interview, pages 53 through 64. Leaves held in protective mylar sleeves. All housed in a custom black cloth folder, measures 10" x 12.5". An important piece of a notable interview from the Civil Rights Movement era. In this interview, Malcolm X states: "The guiding goal of every Muslim is to faithfully serve and follow The Honorable Elijah Muhammad." Malcolm X connected with the Nation of Islam while in prison from 1947 to 1948. He wrote to the Nation's leader, Elijah Muhammad, who advised him to renounce his criminal past and move forward in his religious practice. The two kept regular correspondence over the following decade as Malcolm X's influence grew, both in religious spheres and in the Civil Rights movement. In the early 1960s, Malcolm X's devotion to the Nation of Islam and Muhammad was questioned as public issues arose. These issues included: Malcolm X's anger over the lack of Nation of Islam response to unprovoked LAPD violence against Muslims in 1962, allegations of Muhammad engaging in sexual affairs with young secretaries in 1963, and Malcolm X's censorship by the Nation of Islam following comments made on the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Malcolm X officially announced his split from the Nation of Islam on March 8, 1964, just one year after this article was published. He faced intimidation by the Nation of Islam and was heavily monitored by the FBI. Malcolm X was assassinated on February 21, 1965, in New York City. Signed by Malcolm X, an original typescript leaf from his 1963 Playboy Interview, titled "A Candid Conversation with the Militant Major-Domo of the Black Muslims," with Alex Haley. Page with printed pagination "4" corrected to "5" by hand, with additional penciled note at bottom edge. Inside cover with penned note "Printer's Dummy 8-21-26." Contains handwritten printer's note on front endpaper with instructions, signed Forgue, including direction to print 50 copies, not more than 5 over, and further details regarding paper choice and color. Verso of front free endpaper and page "5" with handwritten printer's instructions. Back endpaper with unsigned, handwritten note "Printed on Ben Abramson's order." in ink and pencil. A 1936 unauthorized edition, limited to 50 copies, had been published with a double M in Somerset on the title page, as seen in this printer's dummy. My South Sea Island was originally published in "The Daily Mail" in London in 1922. The unauthorized edition had been destroyed but for two copies, due to the spelling error in the author's name, and was reprinted immediately. All pages pasted to paper with spots from glue showing along corners. Printed plate of page 4 loose but intact and present. [WITH] Abramson's three page typed rendering entitled "Hell's Paving Stones," describing a conversation between Maugham and himself on collecting in general, and Maugham's publications in magazines in particular. Maugham had forgotten where he had published "My South Sea Island," and misplaced his own typescript of it. Abramson eventually located the piece in a 1921 issue of The Daily Mail. No copies of the issue were available and requested Photostats were defective. As a result Abramson decided to print it himself and contacted his printer. The following one and a half pages reflect a conversation between Abramson's printer and the "publisher." The final paragraph describes the surprise discovering that Somerset was spelled with two Ms in the first 50 copies printed. Abramson closes with "And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is how I came to write "The Raven." Contains pencil note at top of first page: "for Reading and Collecting," a monthly review of rare and recent books. [WITH] The Theatre. Special Series.No. 155. Vol. XXVI, Nineteenth Year. November, 1895. Includes original, pasted down sepia-toned photograph of Mr. & Miss Somerset, with tissue guard. Wraps with very light wear and some sunning along edges and spine of wraps. Block lightly age-toned. Norman Forgue was the founder of several private presses, including At the Sign of the Gargoyle, The Black Cat Press, Normandie House. and The Norman Press. Born in 1904 Forgue saw his first printing press in his uncle's basement. At the age of 13 Forgue took his first jobs at printers in Chicago. After getting his apprentice card he took various jobs offered by Chicago printers and eventually worked for Western Electric. He joined the Navy when dissatisfied with the compensation, and eventually worked in the Navy print shop. Very good to near fine condition.
