However , the manuscript material is largely in the handwriting of his two secretaries , Tobias Lear and Bartholomew Dandridge . It is clear that Washington wanted to keep a record of this kind and many of his Diary entries during the First Term resemble this journal that his secretaries maintained for the second term . The record here is fullest for 1793 and is fairly complete for 1794 with more fragmentary entries for the remaider of Washington's Presidency . It is a journal of correspondence and an executive daybook , constituting a day by day account of the activities of the executive departments . The material relative to the War Department is particularly important because most of its records were destroyed by a fire in 1800 . This Journal is also important because Washington's Diary entries for most of the period covered by the Journal have never been located . This is a very valuable record of the formative years of the American Presidency . Dust jacket is protected with a mylar cover .
