Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Original handwritten ALS. Sent to Hamamdjizades (Hamamdji Zade Nouri Aly). Letterhead 'Simeon Guentcheff & Freres' as bilingual in Bulgarian and French. Dated 2.XI.1927. "Accusons réception de votre honoree du 25 m.p. sont le contenu nous tromous conforme aux commandes faites par votre M.eur Nic…olas Guentcheff.". After that introduction there's a short list: Poissons: Scoumuri, Palamond, Toric. 'Tarama', 'Marmeredjik' and Charan, Ak-cheir and Bandirma caviars. Haci Tahir Bey, who came from Bahçesaray (Bakhchysarai) in the Crimea with his entire family, was one of many refugees. And he faced all the difficulties both of exile and of resettlement. As soon as he arrived, Tahir Bey found himself in the heart of İstanbul's commercial life; however, carving himself a niche was easier said than done. At first he dealt in provisions; in 1859, he became a tobacco trader in the neighborhood of Langa Kapisi, also known as Yeni Kapi, in Istanbul. Soon, unfortunately, he found that established local merchants were unhappy with the competition and complained to the Municipality. In turn, the Municipality ruled that, provided they did not engage in illegal activities, Tahir Bey and the rest of the refugees should be allowed to conduct their business unmolested. Just as he found no peace in his business dealings, Tahir Bey was not left alone in Zekeriyaköy, where he and his family had settled. According to members of the present generation of his family, his home was attacked by some local gangs so that they were forced to move to neighboring Sariyer. Around the same time, he moved his place of business to Unkapani, and his son Ali Nuri married the daughter of the owner of the historical Public Bath (hamam) of Sariyer. The profession of Ali Nuri Bey's father-in-law gave the family its surname as well as a brand name that would command respect for more than a century. Ali Nuri Bey continued in his father's footsteps, gradually becoming the kind of entrepreneur that the Ottoman Empire sorely needed. The 1880s witnessed his earliest ventures as he began to deal in provisions near Unkapanı, and established the first incarnation of what would later become Hamamcioglu Müesseseleri Ticaret Türk A.S. in the form of a sole proprietorship located in the commercial building Limon Han in the Tütüngümrük neighborhood of the district of Eminönü. In 1885, his son Nuri Ali joined the firm. At this date, a commercial yearbook makes mention of "Ali (H.)", a dealer in oil and rice, at No. 36, Cambazhane Avenue. While we are unable to determine for certain whether or not this listing refers to a member of the Hamamcioglu family, the same commercial directory for the year 1896-1897 does refer to "Hamamcioglu Ali" as a merchant based at No. 85, Osman Efendi Han. Over the next few years, the firm moved a number of times within the same building: thus, it was listed at No. 75 in 1898,5 No. 3 in 1901,6 and No. 9 in 1909. Starting in the 1910s, the firm Hamamcizadeler (or, as it is now known, Hamamcioglu) ventured into different business areas at different locations with a speed that makes it difficult to follow its precise trajectory. For example, a receipt from the wholesale fish market dated 1911 points to the family's interest in seafood. On the other hand, a document dated August 1914 now preserved in the Ottoman Archives orders that the olives in the warehouses belonging to Hamamcizade Ali Bey in the towns of Gemlik and Kursunlu should be guarded, indicating that the firm had a rather broad range of interests within the food sector.8 A listing of businesses registered at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1923 describes "Hamamci Zade Nuri Ali", still located in the commercial building Osman Efendi, as dealing in "fish etc." 9 It is safe to assume that this qualification refers to all kinds of seafood -including salted fish, dried fish, caviar. Memoirs of an Army Officer and Turkish diplomat in Paris during Vichy time. Behiç Erkin was a Turkish career officer, first director (1920-1926) of the Turkish State Railways, nationalized…under his auspices, statesman and diplomat of the Turkish Republic, who helped save almost 20,000 ethnic Jews in France during World War II. He was Minister of Public Works, 1926-1928, and deputy for three terms; and an ambassador. He served as Turkey's ambassador to Budapest between 1928-1939, and to Paris and Vichy between August 1939-August 1943. As Turkish ambassador in France under the German Occupation after June 1940, Erkin used the power of his office and nation's neutrality to save Jews who could document a Turkish connection, however slight, from the Holocaust. Other Turkish diplomats in France and elsewhere, were also active in this rescue effort. The consulate staff under Necdet Kent in Marseille was particularly involved. Second Edition.

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Original b/w photograph. (15x11 cm). Descriptive text at back side in French. Ahmet Ferit Tek was born to Mustafa Resit, an accountant at the Ottoman Ministry of Finance, and his wife Hanife Leyla in Bursa in 1877. To another source, he was born on 7 March 1878. He had a brother İbrahim Refet Te…k. He joined the Young Turks movement, which aimed the restoration of the suspended Ottoman constitution of 1876. He was arrested and exiled to Ottoman Tripolitania, what is today part of Libya. However, he managed to escape to Paris, France via Tunis. In Paris, he studied Political Science, and graduated. During this time, he also wrote for Sura-yi Ümmet ("People's Council", 1902-1929), an Ottoman periodical published by the Committee of Union and Progress of the Young Turks movement. After living in Kazan, Russian Empire between 1903-1908, he settled in Egypt. In Cairo, he wrote for the local newspaper Türk. In 1908, Ahmet Ferit returned to Istanbul, and was appointed history professor at Istanbul University's School of Political Science. He co-founded "Milli Mesrutiyet Firkasi" ("National Constitutional Monarchy Party"). The ideas in the party programme of the nationalistic movement were "The Turks had fought on the frontiers of the Empire for centuries. They had to neglect their own land. Anatolia, the heart of Turkish territories, is uncared. The time has come for Turks to think over their own national destiny." On 25 March 1912, he co-founded Türk Ocaklari (Turkish Hearths), a nationalistic organization, with Mehmet Emin Yurdakul (1869-1944), Ahmet Agaoglu (1869-1939), Yusuf Akçura (1876-1935) and some others. He was elected chairman of the organization in the first board meeting succeeding Yurdakul, the founding president. He published the newspaper Ilham ("Inspiration"), where he wrote hot. During the Turkish War of Independence, he supported the Kemalists. He entered the newly established parliament in Ankara as a deputy of Istanbul. He was appointed Minister of Finance in the 1st cabinet of the Executive Ministers in the Government of the Grand National Assembly on 17 July 1920. He served at this post until the end of the 2nd cabinet of the Executive Ministers on 19 May 1921. He took part in the Turkish delegation sent to the Conference of Lausanne (1922-1923). After the proclamation of the Turkish Republic, he remained in the parliament as a deputy of Kütahya, and was appointed the Minister of the Interior in the 1st and the 2nd cabinet of Ismet Inönü between 30 October 1923 and 22 November 1924. After 1925, he chose a diplomatic career. He was appointed ambassador to London (1925-1932), Warshaw (1932-1939), and Tokio (1939-1943). (Source: Wikipedia). This photograph was taken in Lausanne. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Modern cloth bdg. Cr. 8vo. (19 x 13i5 cm). In Ottoman script. 45 p. Tear in last page. Partly uncut and untrimmed. Hilye-i Hakanî. AH: 1307 = AD: 1890. The term hilya denotes both a visual form in Ottoman art and a religious genre of Ottoman Turkish literature, each dealing with the physical desc…ription of Muhammad. Hilya literally means "ornament". They originate with the discipline of shama'il, the study of Muhammad's appearance and character, based on hadith accounts, most notably Tirmidhi's al-Shama'il al-Muhamadiyyah wa al-Khasa'il al-Mustafawiyyah ("The Sublime Characteristics of Muhammad"). In Ottoman-era folk Islam, there was a belief that reading and possessing Muhammad's description protects the person from trouble in this world and the next, it became customary to carry such descriptions, rendered in fine calligraphy and illuminated, as amulets. In 17th-century Ottoman Turkey, hilyes developed into an art form with a standard layout, often framed and used as a wall decoration. Later hilyes were also written for the first four Caliphs, the companions of Muhammad, Muhammad's grandchildren (Hasan and Hussein) and Islamic saints (walis). Mehmed Hakani Beg's 'Hilye' is one of the first example of the 'hilye' literature in the Turkish / Ottoman world. Özege 7631.; Not in TBTK (It has earlier and later editions).

8vo (130 x 193 mm). 10 ff. Ottoman Turkish manuscript on paper. Black ink in naskh script, with important words, numbers, and phrases in red. With illuminated 'unwan, rubricated charts, an astronomical diagram, and 12 marginal drawings of the months of the zodiac. Contemporary gilt stamped calf with fore-edge flap. Marbled endpa…pers. A delicately executed Ottoman Turkish calendar with finely drawn diagrams indicating the movement of the sun in the signs of the zodiac, astrological charts indicating actions to take or to avoid at a certain time of day, and the signs of the zodiac drawn in marginal medallions. - Calendars of this style were popular in the Ottoman Empire and evolved into the almanacs of the later period. This example is particularly beautifully presented and also includes an illustration of a lunar eclipse. While eclipse diagrams are a common inclusion in many astrological and astronomical manuscripts of the time, it would have been particularly relevant in the years covered, as there would be a total lunar eclipse particularly visible in the Ottoman Empire during July 1674. - Binding professionally and subtly repaired with spine/front hinge replaced; the final diagram has been clipped from a damaged leaf and pasted on a fresh one. Hint of staining, but altogether a beautiful example of the calendrical tradition.

First Edition of the complete Bible in Ottoman Turkish, the chief language of European and Asiatic Tu…rkey, and the official language of the Turkish Empire. The translation was undertaken in the 17th century by Wojciech Bobowski, a Polish convert to Islam known as Ali Bey, chief translator to Sultan Muhammad IV, at the instigation of Levin Warner, then Dutch Ambassador at Constantinople. It is apparently based upon a French protestant version. The New Testament from his manuscript held by Leyden University was edited by Heinrich Friedrich Diez, former Russian Ambassador at Constantinople and further revised and edited by French Oriental scholar, Jean Daniel Kieffer [1767-1832] before being printed in Paris in 1819. In 1820 Kieffer became the first Agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society in France, and in the same year began a thorough revision of Ali Bey's translation of the Old and New Testaments. The complete Bible, without the Apocrypha, was published in 1827 in an edition of 5,000 copies together with a further 2,000 copies of the New Testament on its own. Darlow & Moule 9456.

Soft cover. Condición: As New. Original decorative brown bdg. with embossing. Large demy8vo. (22 x 16 cm). Introduction in Modern Turkish; facsimile plates in original Ottoman script. [40] p. Halim Özyazici Mesk (Tipki Basim Eserler Serisi - 1). [REPRINT EDITION]. Prep. by Murat Kiliç. Mustafa Halim Özyazici, was an Ottoman call…igrapher and one of the last of the classical Ottoman calligraphers, using the Arabic script. He was a versatile calligrapher with a high level of expertise in many styles of script, but was widely regarded as a master jeli-thuluth. He is most noted for his work on various restoration projects, of both manuscripts and public buildings. He was born Mustafa Abdülhalim on 14 January, 1898 in the Hazeki district of Istanbul. He was the son of Nalinci Haci Cemâl Efendi, originally from Crimea and his mother was Sudanese. He was educated at Gülsen Junior High School, where he was given lessons in calligraphy by Hamid Aytaç, who recognised his talent and encouraged him to pursue calligraphy as a career. He later studied drawing and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul. His formal calligraphy studies were with Hasan Riza Effendi (1849-1920) and Kamil Akdik (1862-1941) where he mastered the thuluth, nasih and riqâ scripts. In 1916, he was drafted into the Army. After completing basic training he worked in the Military Printing Department and also worked in Evkâf-i Islâmiyye Printing Press. Following his discharge from the Army in 1924, he opened an office in Bâbiâli Street (The Sublime Porte) where he prepared all types of calligraphy; business cards, seals and book covers. He also taught in various schools around the Cagaloglu district of Istanbul. From 1927, he was employed in the Imperial Chancery. When the Latin alphabet replaced Arabic lettering in 1928, he applied to go to Egypt, where classical calligraphy, using Arabic script, was still valued, but his application was rejected in 1929. He subsequently abandoned calligraphy altogether. However, during the 1940s, his skills in classical calligraphy found an outlet when he became part of a major restoration project which worked on repairs to numerous manuscripts in a variety of styles and the restoration of calligraphic reliefs and monumental art in historic, public buildings, including many mosques. In 1948, he was appointed to the position of 'old writing teacher' at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul; a position he retained until his retirement in 1963. One of his responsibilities was to write the diplomas for those who were about to graduate from the Academy. He died on 30 September, 1964, ten days after being involved in a traffic accident. He was buried in the Kozlu Cemetery. Although he developed expertise in many different types of script, he was regarded as a master of jeli-thuluth script. He wrote a number of exercise books for students to practice scripts in nesih, thuluth-nesih, riq'a, diwânî and jeli diwânî, and which were part of a program designed to promote the art of calligraphy. These books are still being printed and distributed to students of calligraphy.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Modern brown cloth bdg. 16mo. (15 x 10,5 cm). In Ottoman script. 78 p. Sevdâ-yi sa'y ve [ü] amel. Hegira: 1296 = Gregorian: 1879. was an Ottoman journalist, author, translator and publisher during the Tanzimat period. In his works, he was known as Ahmet Mithat Efendi, to distinguish…him from the contemporary politician Midhat Pasha. Ahmet Mithat Efendi took his name from Ahmed Sefik Midhat Pasha, as he worked for a time as an official and newspaper editor in Midhat Pasha's Vilayet of the Danube. Politically, his orientation was more conservative, compared to writers such as Namık Kemal. He was a prolific writer, more than 250 of his works have survived. From 1878 on, he published the newspaper Tercüman-i Hakikat (Interpreter of Truth). His editorship and publication of Olga Lebedeva's translations of Russian literature into Turkish served as an introduction of Tolstoy, Lermontov and Pushkin to Turkey's readership. In addition, he was a patron and teacher to Fatma Aliye, one of the most famous female Ottoman authors. (Source: Wikipedia). In this book, Ahmet Mithat describes how important it is to correct the economic backwardness of the Ottoman Empire and to "work" to save people from the economic collapse. The Darülbedayi was an Ottoman imperial theatre established in Istanbul in 1914. Its history was closely linked to that of its director, the actor M…uhsin Ertugrul. On 31 March 1920, the second regulation prepared by the Municipality has thirty-three articles, and with this regulation, Dârülbedayi became a theater that only gave representations. Upon the disagreement between the artists and the board, a significant number of the artists separated and established a private theater (The New Stage). The work of this group did not last long, and when the founder Ismail Faik Bey went bankrupt, the group fell apart. (Source: Tiyatromüzesi [i.e. Turkish Theater Museum]). Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Original manuscript autograph letter signed (ALS) by Ali Çetinkaya sent to Turkish doctor Ethem Akif Battalgil who was the father of Fahire Battalgil (Battalgazi), who was the first Turkish zoologist. For Battalgil's brother's death, Çetinkaya is conveying his condolences. The letter was written… and signed by Ali Çetinkaya, but, he added his wife and daughter. Dated 11. IV. 1942, Ankara. Ali Çetinkaya, also known as "Kel" Ali Bey was an Ottoman-born Turkish army officer and politician, who served eight terms in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, including a period in 1939-40 as his country's first Minister of Transport. He was born in Kara Hisâr-i Sâhib (present-day Afyonkarahisar) in Hüdavendigâr Vilayet as the son of Ahmed Efendi. He studied in the Bursa Military High School (Bursa Askerî Idadisi ). After graduating from military high school, he entered the Ottoman Military Academy (Mekteb-i Füsûn-u Harbiyye-i Sâhâne ) In 1898 he graduated the academy and joined the Ottoman military as a Second Lieutenant (Mülâzim-i Sani ). During World War I, he served for the army in the Caucasus and Galicia fronts. When the Greek forces were landing at Smyrna on May 15, 1919, he was a lieutenant colonel and the commander of 172nd Infantry Regiment stationed in the Aegean coastal town of Ayvalik. His regiment was under the command of the 56th Division of Hürrem Bey. Ali played a key role in the first stage of the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922, starting with the opening battle. He was briefly able to hold back the advance into the city of Greek occupation forces. His action is considered to mark the first shots fired by regular forces in the 1919-22 Greco-Turkish War, although there were earlier confrontations in which irregular militias participated, including the battle involving Hasan Tahsin in Izmir, as well as actions in Urla and Ödemis. The hill in Ayvalik from where the first shots were fired is now called Ilk Kursun Tepesi (First Bullet Hill). Today there is a military rehabilitation center on that hill. After the war, Ali Çetinkaya was elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly for eight successive terms and served until 1942, holding ministerial posts in six different governments, including, with the formation of a Ministry of Transport, becoming Turkey's first Minister of Transport. Ali Çetinkaya is considered a hero in Turkey. Cunda Island of Ayvalik was renamed Alibey Adasi (Ali Bey Island) after him, although the old name remains in common use. Signed by Author(s).

In Ottoman script. 72 p., 14 cedvels (schemes) and [14] p. color statistics. Meclis-i Mebûsân Birinci devre 1325-1326 içtimai. 326 senesi muâzene-i umûmîsi hakkinda [.] kaleme alinan… esbâb-i mûcibe mazbata-yi umûmîsi. Meclis-i Mebûsân (The Chamber of Deputies) of the Ottoman Empire was the lower house of the General Assembly, the Ottoman Parliament. Unlike to the upper house, the Senate, the members of the Chamber of Deputies were elected by the general Ottoman populace, although suffrage was limited to males of a certain financial standing, among other restrictions that varied over the Chamber's lifetime. The Second Constitutional Era of the Ottoman Empire began shortly after Abdul Hamid II was forced to restore the constitutional monarchy after the 1908 Young Turk Revolution. The period established many political groups and parties. Ahmet Riza became the first President of the Chamber in 1908. An amendment in 1909 to the original 1876 constitution resulted in the Chamber gaining more true political power at the expense of the non-democratically elected Senate and the Sultan. A series of elections during this period resulted in the gradual ascendance of the Committee of Union and Progress's (CUP) domination in politics. The second largest party Liberal Unionist Party (LU) (Turkish: Hürriyet ve Itilâf) was in fact a coalition of parties led by Prince Sabahaddin. This is a rare protocol register book of Meclis-i Mebûsân. First and Only Edition. Not in Özege.; Not in OCLC.
