Hardcover. Condición: Fair. A delightful work, by a self-proclaimed 18th century jack-of-all trades and master-of-all, John Trusler. Prepared and published by the author, Honours of the Table functions as a how-to for considerations of the 18th century dinner table; it still holds strong interest for what it did accomplish (meat carving and market guide) and what it endeavored to accomplish (burdensome and humorous late 18th century social guidelines). This work has developed particular interest for culinary collectors; it contains an early illustrated guide to properly cutting various meats, The Art of Carving, and a guide to selecting meat, eggs, etc. at the market. The chapters on appropriate 18th century table behavior, for both "youth" and "young women", contain a number of eyebrow raising guidelines. Just a few quotes, from many: "Smell not your meat when eating." "Spit not on the carpet." "Punch no one in conversation." For young women: "Dread becoming cheap." "Read no novels, but let your study be in history, etc." "Trust no female acquaintance." Trusler, in contemporary advertisements, was proud of his works; regarding his The Progress of Man and Society, he states: ". it will be found to be the most entertaining and informing book that ever yet was published, and what every parent or instructor should put in the hands of youth." And when discussing the woodcuts he prepared for Proverbs Exemplified: ". so well designed, and the characters in human life so well drawn and preserved, the persons of taste may examine them with pleasure; and Dr. Trusler ventures to say, are no ways inferior to Hogarth's." Unfortunately this copy does not include his aggrandizing advertisements. Title Page - Not uncommon to this period, the title page attempts to describe the entire work: The Honours of the Table, or, Rules for Behaviour During Meals; with the whole Art of Carving, illustrated by a variety of cuts. Together with Directions for Going to the Market, and the Method of Distinguishing Good Provisions from Bad; to which is added A Number of Hints or Concise Lessons for the Improvement of Youth, on all Occasions in Life. By the Author of Principles of Politeness, etc. For the Use of Young People. Physical Attributes - Measures approx. 16 x 10 x 1 cm, 12mo. Calf binding. Illustrated. Pages - 120. Signatures signed A-E12. Condition - See pictures. Contemporary calf binding well worn with edge wear, corner wear and some rubbing to the boards, joints cracked. There is a worm route along the rear board. Top and bottom of spine are chipped exposing the ties used to bind the signatures. "Mrs. Jennings 1872" written on the flyleaf. Ghost of ink inscription on the same flyleaf, from something that was once placed inside the front cover of the books. Turn-ins have ghosted through to the title page. An ex-libris bookplate was removed from over the armorial of Trusler, but a few traces remain. Some toning throughout, more near page edge. Occasional fox spot, thumb, and dog-eared page. Tiny chip (.5 cm) at bottom of 79/80. The "Valuable Hints. Worth the Attention of Young Persons" has some pen marks on pages 112/13. Thumbing at bottom of 116. No flyleaf (free blank endpaper) at rear. Turn-in has again ghosted rear leaf (120). Mostly the text block is clean, with nice margins. John Trusler (ilustrador).…

Hardcover. Condición: Fair. Hardcover. 264 pages. Bound in original full leather, which is chipped and scuffed and partially torn off in a couple places, but which is still attached both front and back. Glue residue (from a book cover that has since been removed) on inside covers. A name has been clipped from the top of the title page, but the handwritten date March 1801 and the words Harlow and Essex are still there. Half title page with an engraving of an old man leading the way for a younger one, and the words see with your own eyes in the engraving. Verso of that half-title engraving is the Trusler coat of arms, which serves as a frontispiece to the book. 5 page introduction before the pagination begins at page 1. Page 19/20 has a long closed tear. Page 37/38 is missing a large chunk from the upper corner. 29 of the first 30 engravings are hand-colored (but not particularly well). The rest, about 100 of them, are in the original condition. They are a very fine set of illustrations, showing in great detail various trades; printing, shopkeeping, tailor, fishing & angling, tanner, brick making, brewing, and more. There are hot air balloons, Africans, shipwrecks, executions and pillories, as well as illustrations showing all the punishments of heaven. There are images of the human skeleton and organs, muscles and blood vessels. There are several nudes, both male and female. All are full of life and detail. The illustrator, John Bewick, is often regarded as the first professional illustrator. His is best know for his collaboration with his more famous older bother Thomas on Gay s Fables; they produced a herbal together as well. A scarce illustrated title. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book.…

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. On offer is a beautiful, hard-bound collection of sermons written by many prominent religious scholars of the time, dating from late 18th century England, and curated by the Reverend Dr. John Trusler (1735-1820). The book is a collection of sermons and homilies. They include homilies with such titles as On domestic Happiness, The notice of the World, a motive to virtue, The Advantage of Public or Private Calamities, On partaking of other men's Sins and more. The collection belonged to William Armstrong, whose name appears on the front flyleaf. However, our informal research has not found any additional information about him. From some notes made in the book, this volume was used in 1770-1771. Curated by Rev John Trusler, the sermons are printed with beautiful early typography intended to mimic manuscript font. This was a part of Trusler's lucrative scheme, in which he proposed printing sermons in script type to imitate handwriting and then sell them to clergymen who did not want to write their own sermons. Each sermon is credited to their original author at the end. Included sermons are credited to Baptist minister James Foster (1697-1753) , British Unitarian minister William Enfield (1741-1797) , Anglican clergyman Laurence Sterne, Archbisop of Canterbury William Wake (1657-1737) , and Bishop of Chichester Thomas Manningham (1651? -1722). A few sermons are listed as "compiled" and some are not credited but include additional notes and annotations from the collection's curator, Rev John Trusler. Trusler has signed his name in ink at the end of many of the sermons. This book is an example of Dr. Trusler's early attempts at establishing a printing and bookselling business. In 1769, Trusler sent circulars to every parish in England and Ireland proposing to print in script type, in imitation of handwriting, about a hundred and fifty sermons at the price of one shilling each, to save the clergy both study and the trouble of transcribing (Wikipedia). This collection of sermons, therefore, seems to be an example of Trusler's sermon curation, peppered with his own additions and notes, some in the form of small attached pages, others in the form of full pages of manuscript notes. Before becoming a printer and bookseller, Trusler took his holy orders and became a priest in 1759, rising through the ranks of British clergy work. He also worked as a lecturer, eventually establishing an academic academy only to give it up when it was not lucrative, and move on to medical school at Leyden University. While his name does not appear in their catalogue of graduates, he did assume the title of doctor. In the end, his most lucrative undertaking was his sermon sales and publishing business, in which he published many books including his own memoir. This absolutely remarkable, unique relic of 18th century British Christian history and early typography would be a sensational asset to any library, and the sermons contained within provide an excellent window into the religious/moral thinking of the day as preached in Christian congregations in England Interesting to note, one single annotated page of a sermon contained in this book in the same typescript sold for 1500 British pounds through Forum Auctions in September of 2021. The volume measures approximately 8.5 inches by 5.5 inches and contains 100 pages. The hard covers, although stained, are in good condition. The pages are all in excellent condition save for one page with some rips and tears. Both the typography and handwriting is not only clear but beautifully done. The title "Sermons M. S' is stamped on the spine. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 100 pages; Signed by Author.…
