First edition of the first book to demonstrate an association between the condition called "Poitou colic" (first described in 1616 by François Citois) and the ingestion of water contaminated with lead. Tronchin showed that water passing over leaden roofs and then collected in cisterns (for drinking purposes) and wine adulterated with lead were two main causes of the disease. He also found that Poitou colic was endemic to occupations that required use of lead (like pottery). Tronchin's book preceded by ten years George Baker's better known account of lead poisoning. There are two issues of this book. One, of 82 pages, is more common and is the only version found in the catalogs of American libraries and private collections. The version of 184 pages offered here is unrecorded in all but the catalog of the Bibliothèque Nationale. In his catalog 28 E.
