Philip William Turner (1925-2006) was an English writer best known for his children's books set in the fictional town of Darnley Mills. In Steam on the Line, the Industrial Revolution comes to Darnley Mills and the countryside around it. A whole way of life must change and Philip Turner uses the story of young Taffy Hughes and Sarah Thurgood to reflect just what happens. The Devils' Back and Darnley Mills Light Railway is at the centre of the change and at the heart of the story. Life is full of hard work, excitement, challenge and danger. Both Sarah and Taffy find themselves more deeply involved than they ever intended. The book is bound in the original yellow cloth covered boards with silver titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with slight damp marking along about 1/2" of the top and bottom edges of both boards. The bottom corners and spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few faint marks and a light stain on the fore edge of the front free endpaper and back of the contents page and some of the first few pages. There is no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and a water stain around the top of the spine and bottom 2 1/2" of the bottom front edge and flap and bottom of the spine. The stain has caused some wrinkling to the wrapper. The spine ends and corners are bumped and nicked and a small piece is missing from the top front spine corner.
