Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. A Philosophical and Political History of the Settlements and Trades of the Europeans in the East and West Indies is an influential 18th-century historical treatise written by the French Enlightenment thinker Abbé Raynal (Guillaume-Thomas-François) with major contributions from the philosopher Denis Diderot. First translated into English by John Obadiah Justamond in 1776, this multi-volume masterwork provides a highly critical, global analysis of European colonial expansion, maritime trade networks, and the brutal realities of the transatlantic slave trade. Rare & Historical Editions T. Cadell Second Edition (1776):This is the definitive 18th-century English printing published in London by T. Cadell. Features the complete text across five distinct volumes, including early fold-out maps drawn by royal geographers like Thomas Kitchin. Overview of Content Coverage The text is systematically structured across its volumes to cover the complete history of global commercial exchange: East Indies (Volumes 1-2): Details the maritime discoveries, military conquests, and commercial monopolies established by the Portuguese, Dutch, French, English, and Spanish empires in Asia and India. West Indies & South America (Volumes 3-4): Documents the discovery of the Americas, the conquest of Mexico and Peru, and the rise of sugar and tobacco plantations. North America & Philosophical Summary (Volume 5): Explores the English colonies (from New England to Florida), provides early commentary on the American Revolution, and features Diderot's radical, anti-colonial philosophical reflections on how global trade altered European morals and politics. The Maps: The 1776 edition originally featured detailed fold-out maps by cartographer Thomas Kitchin. Matching Bindings: Finding all five volumes bound in their original, matching 18th-century calfskin leather with intact spines is what commands the premium price tags.
