Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. 1st Edition. Stated 'First edition February 1952'. You can see the covers in the photos. They're very clean with just a few light white spots. The black lettering on the spine is bright. There is some crinkling at both spine ends. There's also a bump/crease at th…e rear bottom edge just adjacent to the spine. The cover edges are in very good shape, no rubbing, one teeny tiny dent at the front middle one. There's also a tiny nick on the front cover to the right of the composer's name. The page edges are mostly clean. There's a tiny scratch on the middle one. It caused a speck-sized loss of paper at the edge of two consecutive pages, obviously very far from the print. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in quite nice condition. Scrolling through the pages, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. The pages are lightly toned, but uniformly. There are eight pages of illustrations on semi-glossy paper. They are also very clean. In a few instances, the facing text page has a few light amber spots in reaction to the glossy material. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing on any the pages, no turned-down corner creases, no placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've rated it only Fair due to the smallish losses off the top edge of the front and spine. There's also a sliver of loss off the bottom edge of the spine. And there is a thin tear at the juncture between the front cover and spine, just off the bottom edge. The jacket is pretty clean, just a few light spots. The flaps are clean. The previous owner made tucking-in clips at each of the four corners. The price at the front flap's top corner is present and unaffected. At the bottom of the front flap is stated 'Printed in Great Britain'. I have the jacket in a fitted protective cover. From the dust jacket: 'The aim of this book is to present Beethoven as he really was. He is allowed to speak for himself, and the reader is thereby spared what Michael Hamburger in his Introduction terms 'the theories, conjectures and polemics of biographers'. By judicious selection authentic of contemporary documents the editor has succeeded in building up a vivid and many-cited picture of this remarkable musical genius. While the emphasis is on the man, rather the composer, the selection contains many of Beethoven's comments on his own works and on the musical life of his time. It also contains all the more intimate professions of faith which Beethoven confided to his private note-books, together with the letter to his brothers known as the 'Heiligenstadt Will'. '.

Original Wraps. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition in English. Penguin Modern European Poets series - Penguin Catalogue No. D106. First printing of the true first edition, published as a paperback original (PBO) in 1969. Cover photograph of Günter Grass by Hans Rama. ***Very good in colour illustrated thin… card covers, with the publisher's dual price of 20p / 4/- on the back cover. The covers have some light edge wear and rubbing commensurate with age and handling, but no significant creases or tears - just slightly marked at the top of the fore-edge of the page block. Spine slightly faded with a light vertical reading crease. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions or other annotations. Inside of covers slightly browned, and paper stock lightly tanned, but pages clean. No creases or tears. Spine tight. Covers bright. ***88 pages. 180mm x 110mm. ***'Günter Grass, famous as a novelist, is here presented as a poet in a selection from his three published volumes. Grass's belief that an artist, however committed he may be in life, should be only a jester in art, is admirably practised in these poems in which fantasy, ingenuity and humour are substitutes for didacticism, and no word, thing or idea is too sacrosanct to be played with. Even in the recent controversial political poems, which come close to blurring his division between life and art, Grass's tremendous zest and sensuous response are felt.' ***'Penguin Modern European Poets is designed to present, in verse translations, the work of significant poets of this century for readers unfamiliar with the original languages. The series already includes Yevtushenko, Rilke, Apollinaire, Prévert, Quasimodo, a volume of Greek poets, Holub, Herbert and Enzensberger.' (Quotes taken from the back cover) ***First printing of the true first edition, in the original card covers, in very good condition. A paperback original. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Cover photograph by Hans Rama (ilustrador).
