Paz was also a statesman who served in the Mexican government's diplomatic service. The author of more than 30 books, he is regarded as a hero in all of Latin America, despite - perhaps, because of - the fact that he resigned as Ambassador to India when Mexican police opened fire on a group of protesting students.
