Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Rafaello Busoni Ilustrador. The Adventures of Maya the Bee was written by Waldemar Bonsels, Translated by Adele Szold Seltzer, Illustrations made especially for this edition by Rafaello Busoni, was published by Farrar, Straus & Cudahy, Inc., New York, in 1951. Not an ex-library copy, this 191-page, 5 1/2" X 8", 62-year-old offering is in VG/G- condition. The book itself is in overall crisp, firm physical shape. There is some spotty staining from original glue, and some browning/yellowing of endpapers and text's pages(mitigated quite conveniently by the fact that the book is printed, unless I miss my guess, on light brown paper to begin with). There is a 1/4"-wide, greyish-brown spot on the middle-third portion of page 81/82. This offering's dust jacket, having done such an admirable job of maintaining its client's clean/sound condition, definitely shows some wear. I clear taped in 5-6 spots, mostly on top or bottom edges of front/back jacket cover sections to repair/keep from lengthening tears. Rather noticeable shelf wear is observed at the top edge of jacket's spine. From front inside dust jacket flap, "The heroine of this story is Maya--a pert, adventuresome young bee of exceptional nature. On the first day she awoke to life, an elderly lady bee told Maya that the first rule a young bee must learn is to be like other bees and to work for the good of all, gathering nectar all day long. The lady bee told Maya of other things in life, too--the sunshine, lofty green trees, flowery fields, lakes of silver, heavens blue and radiant. She warned her against the dangers of the wicked world, named the bee's most dangerous enemies. Then she spoke of human beings, the highest and most perfect of Nature's creations, and implanted a love for them in the child's heart and a great longing to know them and the world. What else could a bright young bee like Maya do then, but leave her regimented hive and fly out into the sunlight to discover all these things for herself? Maya's adventures reveal all the wonder of the smallest things of nature; the world of the bee becomes warmly human. Children will be delighted with the fanciful and intriguing plot, adults with the humor and subtle human parallels." I cannot really expand upon or beyond the above description of our tale, except to say that this lovely story, originally published around the turn of the last century, has delighted countless readers of all ages, in many various languages around the world. NOTE: The frequent Drawings of Rafaello Busoni, executed in subtle pastel shades of deep violet, various bluish hues, or reddish-brown help bring a host of the story's character's to life. This is a lovely story, told/written by one extremely perceptive human being. Thanks very much!!
