Hardcover. Condición: Fair. Translated by Mr. Dryden ('And several other Eminent Hands'). There are 25 listed (image) b/w engravings ('Adorned with sculptures'); plus a frontispiece portrait of the Rt. Hon. Charles, Earl of Dorset and Middlesex (image). The dedication to his lordship takes up 116 pages. Paneled calf boards with ribbed spine. Condition (external): the leather is very rubbed in places; especially along the book's spine. Curled corners. The main condition-related aspect of this publication is the looseness of the upper board's connection with the book block. It remains attached but only by a thread of binding material. Condition (internal): as one would anticipate for a book almost three centuries old: i.e. tanning throughout with intermittent foxing; with these effects slightly more evident on the preliminary and final pages. pp. cxi, 296. 18mo. Fifth addition. Printed for J. Tonson. More information/photos on request. Please note that, depending on destination, we may request a payment to cover any extra shipping & postage charges. Proceeds to Amnesty International. Abe2544.…

Leather. Condición: Good Only. A pleasing eighteenth-century third edition of Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy's Art of Painting, translated by John Dryden with contributions by Richard Graham and Alexander Pope. An excellent third edition of Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy's The Art of Painting, translated by John Dryden (ESTC: T1222964). First published in 1695 by W. Rogers in Fleetstreet, London. Originally published after de Fresnoy's death in 1668 in Paris by C. Barbin under the title, De arte graphica (USTC 6133804).Bound in contemporary calf boards, rebacked. Illustrated with an engraved frontis and woodcut initials, head pieces and additional printer's ornaments. Includes both English and Latin printed annotations in the margins.Signatures run as follows: A8, a-d8, e4, B-Cc8, Dd2.England's first Poet Laureate, John Dryden, provides a lengthy preface on the parallels between poetry and painting. The work itself is a prose version of du Fresnoy's original poem on his observations on the art of painting, written in Latin and edited by du Fresnoy throughout the 1650s.This edition contains supplementary prefatory material published in the 1716 second edition, including a dedicatory poem, 'To Mr Jervas, with Fresnoy's Art of Painting', by Alexander Pope. Charles Jervas is considered to have edited the later editions. The third edition Richard Graham's A Short Account of the most Eminent Painters, is included at the rear, with a separate title page but continuous pagination. With rebinding, this copy would make a superb candidate for collectors of works on historic art theory. Bound in contemporary calf boards, rebacked with a reinforced spine. Externally, sound. With prominent marks to boards and rubbing to extremities. Evidence of archival repair to the front board. Spine repair significantly cracked, with heavily chipped spine label. Additional loss of leather to the head and tail of spine. Offsetting to end paper. A previous owner's ink inscription to the rear free end paper. Hinge notably strained and spine exposed at front board. Signatures K2-M and M2-M7 are held in by a single thread. Scattered spotting throughout, occasionally heavier, though text remains readable. The odd closed tears to pages. Good Only. Not Stated (ilustrador). book.…
