Johan Tranér (1770-1835) var universitetslärare och översättare, docent i latinska språket 1812, med professors titel från 1815. Han lyckades dock inte, trots att han försökte flera gånger, vinna någon professur. Han utnämndes 1825 till kyrkoherde i Söderköpings församling, men uppehöll sig även sedan dess mestadels i Uppsala. Tranér är fr. a. känd för sina översättningar från grekiska och latin (Homeros, Ovidius, Anakreon m. fl.) och sina latinska kväden över tilldragelser vid universitetet. De sistnämnda, som "beundrades för fin rytmik, rik fraseologi, lysande skildrargåva och kraftfullt herravälde över språket", är samlade i föreiggande volym. Den inleds med "Juventus eucharistica", en efterbildning av Tegnérs Nattvardsbarnen, i vilken Tranér "lyckades så utomordentligt väl, att läsaren mångenstädes tvekar huruvida icke efterbildningen äger företräde framför originalet".
