Royalist risings in Kent and Essex culminated in the seizure of the Essex town on behalf of King Ch…arles I. Colchester was besieged by the New Model Army under its commander Sir Thomas Fairfax, and a prolonged siege led to the the civilian population being forced to eat horses, dogs, cats and even rats. Starved out, the garrison surrendered, and the Cavalier leaders, Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle, were shot on Fairfaxâs orders for their rebellion. This account of a rarely recorded but important event in English history should not be missed by any of the many readers interested in the English Civil Wars.

Collated, complete.Weir was known for both his extensive work as an illustrator, and as "The Father of the Cat Fancy", having organised the first cat show in England, at the Crystal Palace, London, in July 1871.This copy includes fables such as "Wolf and the Crane", "Hare and the Tortoise", "Vine and the Goat", Old Hound", "Fox and the Leopard", "Hare and the Hound", "Wolf and the Shepard", "Dove and the Crow", among many others.Aesop was a storyteller who is thought to have lived in ancient Greece around the 6th century BCE. He is best known for his collection of fables featuring anthropomorphic animals that illustrate moral lessons of honesty, wisdom and kindness. A very detailed history of Leominster, the book is split in to two main sections, the first being a General History and the second Local History . In the latter are chapters on Leominster Priory Church and a supplementary chapter on the town. A very nice copy of a scarce book.
