Limited edition of 500 copies. Cloth, 8vo, 26 cm, ix, 456 pp, plates (some colour), 2697 entries. From the introduction: "Ward & Lock was the most prolific publisher of yellowbacks and paperbacks after George Routledge. The company was formed in June 1854 as a partnership between Ebenezer Ward and George Lock. The present compil…ation consists of virtually all of the yellowbacks and paperbacks issued by Ward & Lock from 1854 through 1905. The change in the style of the imprint is given as it occurred. Each entry gives the date of listing in a British periodical where known and otherwise the date of the title's advertisement or an approximate date obtained from ads, references, and catalogs. In almost every case the first English edition is given and, where there was such, the first American edition. Important later editions are given as well as the first yellowback or paperback edition if different from the Ward & Lock title being noted." From the blurb, announcing the plans for the series: "Each volume will be arranged chronologically and all entries will indicate the publisher, the year, and whenever possible the month and day of publication for both the first English and first American editions, along with other important editions, especially the first Yellowback edition. In many cases the Yellowback is the true first edition of an author's work. Each volume will contain an introductory history of Yellowbacks, a selecton of color photographs, and both a title and an author index." Top edge duststained, otherwise Fine in slightly used dustwrapper with a small chip to the top of the spine.
