Large archive of material collected by Boston mayor and Massachusetts governor William Gaston (1820-1894), primarily related to his political career and his time in political office, ca. 1852-1876. A mixed collection of loose ephemera and correspondence, including many printed ballots with engraved illustrations, as…well as disbound scrapbook pages. The collection is highlighted by a collection of material related to the visit of the Japanese delegation to Boston, led by diplomat Iwakura Tomomi, while Gaston was mayor of the city. A detailed breakdown of the material is as follows: 8 items related to the 1872 Iwakura Embassy from Japan on their visit to Boston, including three visiting cards from members of the Japanese delegation; a menu printed on silk for the August 2, 1872 banquet given in the delegation's honor; a copy of the same menu written by hand in Japanese; and a handwritten personal letter in Japanese from the head of the delegation, Iwakura Tomomi, addressed to William Gaston, and thanking Gaston for the hospitality shown by the city of Boston to the visiting delegation. 16 printed ballots, 8 related to the 1852 Massachusetts state election, including varied (and opposing) parties, with ballots for the Whig Ticket, Temperance Ticket (3), Whig Temperance Ticket (2), Maine Law Ticket, Union Ticket, Regular Whig Ticket; a single 1876 federal election ballot; and another 7 related to Gaston's own campaigns for Congress, Mayor (3), and Governor (3). Many with engraved illustrations, including two with printed portraits of Gaston; as well as a single handbill related to the 1870 mayoral election of Boston titled "Address to the People's Independent Convention to the Citizens of Boston" endorsing Gaston for mayor. A series of seven printed menus for July 8-14, 1876, for a sequence of American Centennial dinners held in Wellesley, Massachusetts; with a group of material related to the June 19, 1875, Cornerstone Piggery Party held at Ridge Hill Farms in Wellesley; with two engraved tickets, one signed on the reverse by Gaston, for events in 1875. A collection of 37 different official seals, most in red wax, with a few printed, including the Department of Justice, the Legations of Liberia and Colombia, various American cities and foreign consulates in the United States. A group of six letters, including one from George Bancroft while serving as a diplomat in Germany, and two letters from constituents written to Gaston while serving as Governor commending him for his refusal to execute convicted murderer Jesse Pomeroy while Pomeroy was still a minor. Most items mounted to unbound scrapbook pages, many over newspaper clippings. Items generally quite well preserved, though mounted; scrapbook pages themselves fragile and moderately chipped along edges. With a few miscellaneous items, including a copy of the 1926 genealogy and biography of Gaston, Gastons, by Edward F. McSweeney. The book contains a single annotation on page 220, noting that Ruth Gaston Foster, granddaughter of William Gaston through his son, William Alexander Gaston, was "My Mother", providing a useful clue as to the provenance of this material.
