Tommaso Costo (vers 15451613), érudit napolitain, publie pour la première fois Il Fuggilozio à Naples en 1596. Notre exemplaire; l'édition vénitienne de 1601 est l'une des premières réimpressions d'un ouvrage qui connaîtra un réel succès éditorial avec de nombreuses éditions au XVIIe siècle. Le titre peut être traduit approximativement par "Le remède contre l'oisiveté" ou "La fuite de l'oisiveté". Le mot Fuggilozio est une création de l'auteur : fuggire (fuir) + ozio (oisiveté). L'idée est que la lecture de récits édifiants et divertissants protège des dangers moraux de l'oisiveté. L'ouvrage est construit sur le modèle du Décaméron de Giovanni Boccaccio : un groupe de nobles personnages (huit gentilshommes et deux dames) se réunit et raconte des histoires réparties sur huit journées. Marque typographique au titre. Texte italien en caractères romains et italiques. Trois tables finales : index des personnages et auteurs cités, table des nouvelles, table des sentences.
