These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come m…ounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of Lord Tollemache, with the caption "Cheshire" with biographical details. John Jervis Tollemache, 1st Baron Tollemache (5 December 1805 - 9 December 1890), was a British Conservative Member of Parliament and a major landowner and estate manager in Cheshire. Asking the recipient 'through this medium to recommend my son Lieut Halliday [Francis Halliday, born around 1776; fl. 1820] of the Thunderer, now at Jamaica, to the notice of Lord Hugh Seymour; Sir Hyde Parker has sent me an account of him, but to my great disappointment has not brou…ght him Home - - - - - Francis has been six years in the East & West Indies & very attentive to his profession'. She feels sure that 'a line from yr. Lordship to Lord Hugh could not fail of being of great use to him'. Docketed on reverse 'Mem: Enquire abt. this. Lady Jane calls him Lt. but he does not appear to be so.' A second note ends 'I will mention her Son to Ld. Hu: Seymour when I next write to him.' Francis Halliday is described on the second leaf of the bifolium as a midshipman.

Dust-wrapper, edges a little rubbed , particularly to head of spine. Inside the back cover is a card pocket containing 6 Diagrams I - VI; one large gridded sheet portraying…the court ; envelope containing 12 coloured counters (3 of each colour). Diagram I and Diagram II (to illustrate page 39) missing. A very good copy of this major work on the game.
