A copper token, issued by Skidmore of Holborn, depicting a bust of John Thelwall, facing right, with his name lettered around the edge, and also lettered 'JAMES' (the engraver). A copper token depicting a bust of John Thelwall, facing right, with his name lettered around the edge, and also lettered JAMES (the engraver). On the obverse: The standing figure of Minerva, holding a shield and a pole with the Cap of Liberty on top, lettered 'Truth For My Helm & Justice For My Shield'. The British Museum holds four similar tokens, dating them variously '18thC' or 1794(?); see SSB,192.95. They give the maker as C. James and the issuer as Thomas Spence. Copper token, 28mm diameter, outer rim milled, edges lettered. A very nice clean example. A copper token, issued by Skidmore of Holborn, depicting a bust of John Thelwall, facing right, with his name lettered around the edge, and also lettered 'JAMES' (the engraver). On the reverse: A Cap of Liberty sits upon a pole, dated 1796, and lettered 'Libertas'. This token is very similar to one in the British Museum which is attributed to Thomas Spence (SSB, 192.96), but their version is described as having a plain edge. On our example the edge is not plain, but has written 'Skidmore - Holborn - London'. A curator's note accompanying the BM token states 'Bell suggests that this may have been produced by Skidmore, not Spence. However, given the sentiment, and the fact that Spence was still in business in 1796, this seems unlikely'.
