Wanderup, Germany: self-published, 1963-1968. Various sizes and formats, mostly quartos measuring ca. 30 × 21 cm each. Staple-stitched decorative wrappers (one smaller perfect-bound pamphlet measuring 19 × 14 cm). The third issue with the unique outsider color pencil drawing and manuscript clipping, as called for. Three of the issues with later pencil gift inscriptions by the editor. Very minor soil and tear; overall a very good set. Complete run of the rare and influential post-war avant-garde journal, published from 1963 to 1968 under the editorial direction of Riewert Q. Tode and Hartmut König, offering cutting-edge poetry, prose, and criticism, some of which was informed by radical politics, presented in a rough-hewn, experimental manner, with most of the writings in mimeographed typescript, some in the hand of the author, and some in various other formats including abstract concrete poems, accompanied by numerous original graphic works (some in color), many signed by the artists. Each issue published in a limited edition, ranging from 70 to 200 copies. The final issue, a letterpress-printed anthology of poems against the Vietnam War, was printed in a larger run, but included here is an issue from the limited run of 200 copies featuring an original print by Cloy (Klaus-Ove) Kahrmann. Tode's ambitious journal reflects the tumultuous mood of the mid-1960's as well as the influence of the American Beat movement. Literary contributors include U. Raschke, Tim Ulrichs, K. D. Goerdeler, P. G. Hübsch, V. Scherliess, V. Braun, and Ingo Cesaro; the graphics are by Jochen-Harro Bierzunski, Karl-Ove Kahrmann, Tim Ulrichs, Jane Balsgaard, Norbert Richter, and others. Issue three was a special bilingual issue devoted to Flemish and Dutch poetry and prose, and issue six was an early attempt to showcase the writing and artwork of psychiatric ward patients: the editors printed actual texts, including one original manuscript snippet, and the limited run of this issue (included here) also contained an original pencil artwork by an inmate. Presented in various formats, mostly on rough paper with mimeographed typescript to rectos only; the exception is no. 7-8, which is a perfect-bound anthology of writings by 39 authors, all against the war in Vietnam. As of January 2024, KVK and OCLC locate four complete runs in North America.
