At 23, he became a professional boxer and quickly rose through the ranks, winning the Southern Area title and the WBC International title. He also fought for a European title and was just one fight away from a world title shot. In 1993, he received the Best Fight of the Year award for his epic battle with Wally Swift Jr., which was shown on Sky TV. Out of 28 professional fights, he won 25.
