A baritone, he sang leading roles with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City more than 600 times between 1923 and 1950. He also performed a number of musical theatre roles, including Captain Hook in a touring production of Peter Pan.

His dynamic range (in his prime) ranged from forceful fortes to delicate pianissimos, he sang leading roles with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City more than 600 times from 1923 to 1950. He performed diverse musical theatre roles, including Captain Hook in Peter Pan in a touring show.
