The author was born there in 1897 and after an adverturous life as a young man, including active service with the NZ Army in WWI, he began a career in journ…alism in 1927. Returning to Arrowtown in the late 1960s he compiled this excellent history on the town and district, with its exciting and colourful past , based on the gold rush of the mid-1800s, contrasted with its comparatively quite revival as a attractive village much admired (and photographed) by its many tourist visitors. 46 pages, 29 b/w photos, colour art to front card cover, historic map to rear. Good to Very Good condition overall with wear to leather cover mostly on spine and edges. Joints and binding strong. Clean and unmarked with some page tanning, as pictured. A nice copy! James Thomson (1700-1748) was a Scottish poet and playwright. The Seasons is one of his best known works, which celebrates nature and its reflection of the Divine and of the interconnectedness of humanity and the natural world. John Bell, C. W. A carefully planned edition of which Corney was delighted to edit, containing both the revised edition of the memoir and an ode to his memory published in 1749. Published in four parts from 1726 to 1730, The Seasons, a celebration of country life, was one of the most popular poems of the eighteenth century. It inspired several subsequent works, including Haydn's oratorio The Seasons and paintings by Gainsborough, Turner and Fuseli. The very rare first American edition was published without an imprint in 1764, most likely in Boston. Bell, the publisher of the second edition, specialized in inexpensive editions of important English books. One of these was the first American edition of Blackstone's Commentaries.
