In 1937, oil was first produced in the Patoka area from Mississippian rocks. Through a study of subsurface geology, more specifically through isopach and structural map study, the author suggests that there are possibilities for extending oil production from the Ordovician rocks there. They analyzed Pennsylvanian and Mississippian rock formations because they show the presence of Ordovician structures reflected in them. Silurian reef structures have been found to have developed on the northeast noses of preexisting Ordovician anticlines. Structures are noted as possibly indicating the presence of other reef-like structures in the area.
