12 volumes in 6, 12mo, title pages engraved, engraved frontispiece in volume one, with 61 [of 62] engraved portraits, with contents and four page adverts at the end of volume 12, bound in contemporary calf backed marbled boards, spines with raised bands and black labels, a little rubbed and worn to some headbands, sides rubbed, but a very good sound tight set, FIRST EDITION; published in monthly installments, Dilly's format and presentation seems to have taken a cue from Newbery's popular series of similar small books [his seven volume abridgement by Goldsmith of Plutarch was published the same year], once again appealing, no-doubt, to a female or juvenile audience. The preface emphasises the moral and didactic in its choice of subjects, as well the entertainment potential, opposed, of course, to the expensive folio Biographia Britannica in six folio volumes designed for the gentleman's library. Unlike that work, Dilly's is illustrated with full-length portraits of subjects, all present here apart from John Cabot, apparently never bound in. Considering the part nature of the publication such faults are bound to exist within sets; indeed few complete sets of this first edition are recorded in libraries. A 'New Edition' was, in 1776, edited by Thoma Mortimer, but without the portraits which are of particular charm and significance. Of particular note is the inclusion of philosophers such Newton and Locke; George Berkeley is the final subject [yet variously spelt!], his biography probably the work of Oliver Goldsmith and pirated from the 'Weekly Magazine'. The set has 1764 OWNERSHIP OF JOHANNA SENHOUSE TO THE ENDPAPERS AND MARY GALE TO THE TITLE PAGES. Johanna Senhouse [1701-1771] was from Millom Castle, Cumberland, married Gustavus Thompson of Arkelby Hall in 1720, and resided in Fisher Street Carlisle after his death in 1756. The work was no-doubt part of her library there, passing later to one Mary Gale, though nothing of her is known. An excellent and rare set in contemporayr bindings.…

Also known as the law merchant, consuetudinary law or, somewhat anachronistically, commercial law, lex mercatoria is a system of customary law that developed in the European commercial community during the middle ages to regulate the dealings of mariners and merchants. Although lex mercatoria fell out of use during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, many of its principles were incorporated into the common law. They would later provide the foundation of the (U.S.) Uniform Commercial Code. Beawes [fl. 1775] was a merchant and his book, as indicated by its title, was intended to revive the lex mercatoria. Intended primarily as "a guide to all men in business," this book was nevertheless often cited by lawyers and its authority formed the basis of several decisions. It was especially influential in the United States, where, according to Kent's Commentaries on American Law, it was considered "an authority in mercantile customs" (III:126). The first edition of this book was published in 1751. Our reprint is of the sixth edition, which has considerable additions by Thomas Mortimer [1730-1810], an expert on finance and commercial law. …
