Añadir al carritoCloth. Condición: Good. Early. New York: Appleton, 1865. Herbert Spencer, Illustrations of Universal Progress; A Series of Discussions. With a notice of Spencer's "New System of Philosophy". 12mo. Bright blue cloth binding, elaborately blindstamped, gold titles with decoration, top edge gilt. Antique ex-library purchased from th…e historical collection of one of the USA's oldest libraries and bearing a hand-numbered (1157) and hand-dated (May 1, 1869) bookplate. 451 pp. followed by prospectus for subscription to Spencer's philosophical works (10 pp., including a list of subscribers with their city and state), and 6 pp. of advertising. "Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) British philosopher and sociologist, was a major figure in the intellectual life of the Victorian era. He was one of the principal proponents of evolutionary theory in the mid nineteenth century, and his reputation at the time rivaled that of Charles Darwin. Spencer was initially best known for developing and applying evolutionary theory to philosophy, psychology and the study of society -- what he called his "synthetic philosophy" (see his A System of Synthetic Philosophy, 1862-93). Today, however, he is usually remembered in philosophical circles for his political thought, primarily for his defense of natural rights and for criticisms of utilitarian positivism." (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). This book contains the American notice of the "new system of philosophy". That is followed by the editor's preface. The book is a series of essays first published in English periodicals, mainly around the subject of Evolution. An early edition of a very important book. Chipping to top and bottom of spine, spine faded (but legible), gilt faded, front hinge open, watermarks on about 1/3 of the pages. Light foxing. Text block tight and readable, overall good plus condition.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. First Edition. Small 4to. Khaki green cloth with gilt lettering. xx, 292pp. Very good. Internally tight and fine, with very faintest of binding wear; lightly shellacked spine with hand-lettered paper shelf label near foot. This superb, bright and tight first edition features essays by Henry Dunning MacLeod, William Ma…itland, St. Loe Strachey, J.W. Fortescue, Wynnard Hooper, W.M. Acworth, Bernard Mallet, Alfred Lyttelton and Mackay himself. Given the subject matter it shouldn't surprise that this primo copy hails from the collection of William B. Allison (1829-1908), the powerful Iowa Republican who, as U.S. senator from that state (1873-1908), was one of the "big four" who controlled the Senate; as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee for most of those years, he championed tariff legislation and co-authored the Bland-Allison Act of 1878; as member of the Senate Finance Committee he was often courted by U.S. presidents to hold cabinet positions. Early 20th century bookplate on front pastedown notes "This book is part of Allison Memorial Collection Gift of Mrs. Jennie A. Brayton" and until deaccessioned was part of Allison's non-circulating collection at his hometown public library across the street from his Dubuque residence. Notes Leland L. Sage in his 1956 biography "William Boyd Allison: A Study in Practical Politics," Allison owned "hundreds of books on government, economics, history, banking, finance, and the tariff. An omnivorous reader, Allison doubtless read most of these volumes, if only for relaxation from the strain that accompanied his efforts to solve the many problems facing the Nation.".
