A little wear to tail of spine and a few traces of foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by drawn pictorial title page in colour and by 4 black and white portrait plates. Dorothy Osborne, Lady Temple (1627-95), from a Royalist family, fell in love in 1647 with William Temple (1628-99), later a diplomat in Brussels and The Hague. At first unable to marry, her lively courtship correspondence with him dates from 1652-54, the two years preceding their marriage. The second biographical study is of the poet Thomas Gray (1716-71). David Cecil (1902-86) was a biographer, historian and Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford.
