Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a series of twenty-three letters written to a sister back East by a woman who has joined her husband in a California gold mining town in the 1850s. The letters are published from the Pioneer Magazine of 1854-1855 with extensive editorial notes and corrections. The letters were the model for Bret Harte's fictional treatment of California life in his stories. The book opens a window on daily life in a mining town, its social conventions, hardships, and characters, and celebrates the spirit of the time through the letters of an articulate, educated woman whose observations are discerning and often humorous. This book is a valuable resource for historians and those interested in the era, and has significant literary value as well. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
