Erste Buchausgabe der nach dem zweiten Konzil von Nicäa (787) verfaßten fränkischen Schriften zum byzantinischen Bilderstreit. Als Hauptbearbeiter unter Karls des Großen Leitung gilt Theodulf von Orléans (750-…821); der Herausgeber Eli. Phili. (Elias Philyra) ist der Bischof von Meaux, Jean Du Tillet (1500-1570), und dem Vorwort entnommen. (Siehe dazu: Zedler, Universal-Lexicon, Lpzg. u. Halle, 1745, Band 44, S. 168). Nachdem ungenaue Übersetzungen der Akten der Synode den Hof Karls erreichten und dort der Eindruck entstand, daß Bildern eine Anbetung nach Art von Götzenbildern zuteil werden solle, ließ Karl der Große eine Gegenschrift verfassen, die sogenannten Libri Carolini, aufgeteilt in 4 Bücher mit zusammen 120 Kapiteln. Nach mehreren Jahrhunderten begrenzter handschriftlicher Verbreitung auf Grund der fehlenden kirchlichen Approbation erschienen die Libri Carolini erstmals 1549 in der vorliegenden Ausgabe im Druck. Da die darin gegen die Bilderverehrung gerichteten Argumente eher der protestantischen Theologie entsprachen, setzte die katholische Kirche die Libri Carolini bereits 1564 auf den Index der verbotenen Bücher. Innengelenke gebrochen, fliegender Vorsatz fehlt, Spiegel gestempelt, Titel und das Blatt danach mit kleinem Loch (minimaler Buchstabenverlust), etw. wasserrandig, gering gebräunt und fleckig. Der in Allumiere als Sohn eines bayerischen Einwanderers g…eborene Mertel studierte die Rechte an der römischen Sapienza und trat danach in den päpstlichen Dienst, wo er rasch Karriere machte. Er wurde Präsident des päpstlichen Zivilgerichtshofes und Auditor an der Rota. Papst Pius IX. beauftragte Mertel mit der Ausarbeitung eines Grundgesetzes für den Kirchenstaat und ernannte ihn sukzessive zum vatikanischen Justiz- und Innenminister. Gegen seinen Willen wurde Mertel, der zeitlebens nie die Priesterweihe empfing und damit der letzte römische Laienkardinal war, 1858 in den Kardinalsstand erhoben. 1863 wurde er Präsident des obersten Rates des Kirchenstaates. Als maßgeblicher vatikanischer Jurist, nahm er später auch auf den Verlauf des Ersten Vatikanischen Konzils entscheidenden Einfluss. Mertel war einer der einflussreichsten Männer im Kirchenstaat und wurde von Papst Pius IX., der ihn "als besten Mann des 19. Jahrhunderts" bezeichnet haben soll, sehr hoch geschätzt. 1881 war er Testamentsvollstrecker des verstorbenen Papstes und krönte dessen Nachfolger Leo XIII., der Mertel 1884 zum Vizekanzler der Heiligen Römischen Kirche ernannte.

Der in Allumiere als Sohn eines bayerischen Einwanderers geborene Mertel studierte die Rechte an der römischen Sapienza und trat danach in den päpstlichen Dienst, wo er rasch Karriere machte. Er wurde Präsident des päpstlichen Zivilgerichtshofes und Auditor an der Rota. Papst Pius IX. beauftragte Mertel mit der Ausarbeitung eines Grundgesetzes für den Kirchenstaat und ernannte ihn sukzessive zum vatikanischen Justiz- und Innenminister. Gegen seinen Willen wurde Mertel, der zeitlebens nie die Priesterweihe empfing und damit der letzte römische Laienkardinal war, 1858 in den Kardinalsstand erhoben. 1863 wurde er Präsident des obersten Rates des Kirchenstaates. Als maßgeblicher vatikanischer Jurist, nahm er später auch auf den Verlauf des Ersten Vatikanischen Konzils entscheidenden Einfluss. Mertel war einer der einflussreichsten Männer im Kirchenstaat und wurde von Papst Pius IX., der ihn "als besten Mann des 19. Jahrhunderts" bezeichnet haben soll, sehr hoch geschätzt. 1881 war er Testamentsvollstrecker des verstorbenen Papstes und krönte dessen Nachfolger Leo XIII., der Mertel 1884 zum Vizekanzler der Heiligen Römischen Kirche ernannte.

Mertel unterzeichnet als Innenminister eine Amtsverfügung seines Ministeriums für den Grafen Saverio Malatesta, Oberstleutnant der ehemaligen…vatikanischen Guardia Civica. Malatesta hatte beim Papst um verschiedenen Privilegien (finanzieller Art und Ehrenrechte) für die Guardia Civica nachgesucht. Mertel berichtet, dass ihn der Kardinalstaatssekretär daraufhin beauftragt habe, ein Dossier über die bisher erteilten Privilegien aus dem Ministerialarchiv zusammenzustellen. Auf der Grundlage des zusammengetragenen Materials habe der vatikanische Ministerrat über die ersuchten Privilegien beraten und diesen schließlich zugestimmt. Nachdem nun noch Papst Pius IX. den Ministerialbeschluss gebilligt habe, stehe der formalrechtlichen Verleihung der ersuchten Privilegien nun nichts mehr im Wege, um die sich Malatesta nun auf der Grundlage der vorliegende Ministerialverfügung kümmern möge. - Die Guardia Civica war eine päpstliche Garde, die 1850 von Papst Pius IX. mit der Milizia Urbana zur Palatingarde verschmolzen wurde. Diese wurde ihrerseits, wie auch die Nobelgarde, 1970 aufgelöst, so dass von den damaligen vier päpstlichen Garden heute nur noch die Schweizergarde und das Gendarmeriekorps der Vatikanstadt fortbestehen. - Theodulf Mertel.
