Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Signed and Inscribed by the psychologist Jacob S. List to the late actor and musician Theodore Bikel. I purchased this book along with a number of others from the library of Mr. Bikel's ex-wife. His bookplate can be found on the front inside cover. The inscription is on the first front end paper and reads as follows: 'June 3/60, To Theodore Bikel, in memory of a wonderful evening with us, Jacob S. List.' Once listed, this will be the Only Copy copy of this book signed by Dr. List. 'Theodore Bikel studied acting at Britain's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his London stage debut in1948. He was also a widely recognized and recorded folk singer and guitarist. In 1959, he co-founded the Newport Folk Festival and created the role of Captain von Trapp opposite Mary Martin in the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music. In 1969, Bikel began acting and singing on stage as Tevye in the musical Fiddler on the Roof, a role he performed more often than any other actor to date. He appeared in films including The African Queen, Moulin Rouge), , I Want to Live!, My Fair Lady, and The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming. For his portrayal of Sheriff Max Muller in The Defiant Ones, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Bikel was president of the Associated Actors and Artists of America until 2014, and was president of Actors' Equity in the late 1970s and early 1980s. For most of his acting career, he became known for his versatility in playing characters of different nationalities, claiming he took on those different personalities so his acting would "never get stale." On television, he played an Armenian merchant on Ironside, a Polish professor on Charlie's Angels, an American professor on The Paper Chase, a Bulgarian villain on Falcon Crest, a Russian on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and an Italian on Murder, She Wrote. You can see the black covers of the book itself in the photos. They are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The six edges are in very good condition. The four corners each have a speck-sized spot of rubbing. There is a very small cloth tear on the rear side of the spine (see 5th photo). This book is square and straight, and very solidly bound from beginning to end. The pages in the book are in excellent condition. I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners. They are also very clean. There is, however, foxing/spotting on both the front and rear inside covers and first and last end papers, which includes the signed page (see 2nd photo). There is also this same foxing/spotting on the verso of the glossy frontispiece (a photograph of Jacob S. List) and on the white margins of the frontispiece, and, in reaction, on the margins of the title page facing the frontispiece. And that's it. There is no other foxing/spotting to be found on any other page in the book, none at all in the text. And I didn't see any soiling at all. There are also no markings in the book. The only attachment is Mr. Bikel's bookplate. And with the exception of the signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in this book. You can see the dust jacket in the photos. It's in very decent condition. It has one tear (5/8ths of an inch) off the bottom edge of the front. There are a few tiny scuffs. And there is some foxing/spotting on the white flaps of the jacket. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. This book appears to propound a somewhat unorthodox approach to psychotherapy. All of the writers were previous patients of Dr. List. They then went on to complete their studies and become therapists themselves. Inscribed by Author(s).

Softcover. First edition. Stated second printing, but the preface makes it sound like it may be a new edition, a first thus. An association copy, inscribed on the first blank: "For Stookie, with love, Krakie." This inscription is from Theodora Kroeber to her grandson (Krakie her grandmother name; her maiden named was Kracaw, so perhaps slant of that). An uncommon book uniquely signed. Of the three studies included, one is by her husband, famous cultural anthropologist Alfred (A.L.) Kroeber, "The Nature of Land-Holding Groups in Aboriginal California"--thus the reason for the gift to her grandson. A.L. Kroeber had died in 1960. The others include "Trade Routes and Economic Exchange Among the Indians of California by James T. Davis and "Original Account of the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island," edited by Robert F. Heiser, who writes the preface to the volume, and Albert B. Elsasser. Alfred Kroeber studied with Franz Boas before making his name at UC Berkeley where he became known as the "Dean of American Anthropologists." Theodora met him as doctoral student there and was herself an accomplished anthropologist, publishing later in life, among other books, The Inland Whale and Ishi in Two Worlds, which tells the story of the last Yahi man who Alfred befriend and studied after her was brought to Berkeley. Ursula LeGuin is their daughter. A very good book in simple yellow wraps with some spots of shallow insect damage to front cover, a few drip marks to rear. A unique family association copy.
