Añadir al carrito1p., 4to. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Engraved illustration of the Old House at the head (signed 'S. Holden'), with an engraving of the Plague-Stone beneath it, followed by the text: 'The Relic represented above formed the corner coping-stone of a garden wall, immediately above the spot indicated in the drawing by the letter A. It is traditional in the neighbourhood that about the middle of the 17th century, (probably in the year 1665,) several cases of The Plague occurred in this house. All direct intercourse with the neighbours being prohibited, the money paid for the provisions and other necessaries was deposited in the square dish seen in the Stone, which was kept filled with vinegar and water for the purpose of disinfection. Those who died of the Pestilence are said to have received interment in a field near the house, and here the remains of three bodies were discovered in the year 1843. The Stone is now in the possession of Dr. Kendrick, Warrington.' A note at the foot relates to the illustration of the Old House: 'The Wash-Lane was formerly often flooded with water, and it is thus represented, with the stepping stones for foot passengers'. Scarce: no copies on either OCLC WorldCat or COPAC.…

Añadir al carrito3pp., 4to. Bifolium. On wove paper watermarked 'R TASSELL | 1831'. 56 lines, arranged in seven eight-line stanzas. Presentable, despite wear and age, closed tears along crease lines, and traces of yellow-paper mount on blank reverse of second leaf. There is no sign that this item was ever published, which is surprising, as it is a superior effort, written with some conviction, the subject being one on which Hollings was regarded as an authority. In 1839 he delivered to the Leicester Mechanics' Institute his authoritative paper titled 'The history of Leicester during the great civil war', which was published the following year by the Leicester firm Combe and Crossley. The first stanza of the present item reads 'The wakened day is streaming | Around the green hill's brow, | Where Autumn's sickly beaming | Has tinged the yellow bough: | Calm speeds the gentle river, | With sparkling glories bright; | And where the tall reeds quiver, | Each blade is bathed in light.' The last stanza: 'Mourn realm of meeds unfaded! | Mourn Land of pleasant hills! | Yon field which Eve hath shaded | Is but the sign of ills - | And for one House which weepeth, | A thousand shall lament, | Before the red sword sleepeth, | And Battle's wrath is spent - | [signed] J. F. Hollings'. A tiny note in the top left-hand corner, in a contemporary hand, reads: 'The battle was not [last word underlined] fought on Sunday, I think'. …

Crosland and Son, Post Office, Sutton Bridge Wisbech.') 3pp., 12mo. He begins with reference to a Wesley letter which 'has been in the family about 50 years more rather than less the family has been connected with Methodism almost from the days of Wesley himself without a break.' He also discusses 'a statue in white (parian marble) I think it is standing 6 ½ in high (Base on which he stands 1 in) in full clerical robe with open book in left hand & the right hand uplifted evidently in the act of addressing the people or preaching.' This has been 'in the family 3 generations at least'. TWO: ALS to Bartelot from Rev. J. S. Simon. 2pp., 4to. He is 'interested in John Wesley's pedigree' and has been in correspondence with 'Mr. Broadley of Bridport', who suggested he should write. He asks for elucidation regarding 'Calamy's statement', going into detail on the question of Wesley's wife's uncle Thomas Fuller. He requests 'light on the subject of the marriage and death of John Westley, and on the place of his burial'. THREE: Printed handbill in light blue and red, headed: 'The Liverpool Wesleyan Methodist Council. | BI-CENTENARY OF WESLEY'S BIRTH, | 1703 JUNE 17th 1903. | PROGRAMME'. 1p., 8vo.
