New York: Marvel Comics Group, September 1966. Staple-bound in original wrappers. The Avengers No. 32, "The Sign of the Serpent!", featuring the debut appearance of Dr. William "Bill" Foster, an African American biochemist who would later become the superhero Black Goliath (first appearing in-costume in Power Man No. 24, 1975). Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Don Heck, with inking by Frank Giacoia and lettering by Artie Simek. Dr. Foster debuts here in a supporting role as a scientific consultant to Hank Pym (Giant-Man), assisting in advanced biochemical experimentation and research into cellular size manipulation. Pictured in multiple panels and identified by name, Foster is characterized as a confident, sharply dressed professional working within the Avengers' laboratory infrastructure. His introduction was significant at a time when African American representation in mainstream superhero comics was exceedingly rare; Foster's eventual transition to Black Goliath would make him one of Marvel's earliest Black heroes to headline his own title.
