Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the emergence of communal government and the development of urban autonomy in the Italian region of Lombardy during the Middle Ages. Beginning with the Lombard invasions of the 6th century, the author traces the gradual rise of local political structures. It argues that this process was driven by a combination of factors including the decline of imperial authority and the rise of a wealthy merchant class in the Lombard cities. The book explores the various forms of communal government that developed, the role of bishops and nobles in urban politics, and the conflicts between cities and the empire. The author also examines the impact of communal government on the development of Lombard society and culture, arguing that it fostered a spirit of independence and self-reliance that would shape the region's history for centuries to come.
