Small folio,192 pp.,colour plates by Peter Trusler. Publisher's canvas cloth and slipcase, the collector's issue, limited to 200 copies and signed by authors and artist. A landmark book of Australian bird art, with an excellent text by well known Bird Observer Club stalwarts Tess Kloot and Ellen McCulloch. The technical skill of the paintings is unsurpassed but what makes the artwork so striking is the clever positioning of the subjects in urban and suburban settings. For example the Indian Mynah on the kerbside with an empty cheese packet, or the Little Raven calling on a telegraph pole. Peter Trusler (born 1954) completed a science degree in 1974 at Monash University, majoring in zoology. The paintings were completed in 1978-1979. In his artist notes (page 11) he says "where possible I prefer to work from life. A number of the paintings are portraits of individual birds and all of the backgrounds and plants have been painted from actual specimens.
