Front cover has been re-glued,Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . Phormio is a Latin comic play by the early Roman playwright Terence, based on a play by Apollodorus of Carystus. It was first performed at the Ludi Romani of 161 BC.The play is named after the character Phormio, who is a cunning "parasite" (that is, a person who makes a living by performing services for richer people). The plot is set in Athens, and revolves around the love affairs of two young men, Phaedria and Antipho, who are cousins. Phaedria is in love with a harp-player called Pamphila, but doesn't have the money to buy her from her owner Dorio; Antipho wishes to marry a free but poor girl called Phanium, unaware that she is in fact Phaedria's half sister as the result of an affair between Phaedria's father Chremes and a Lemnian woman. By clever legal wrangling, Phormio manages to help both young men to obtain their wishes, and in addition extracts a large sum of money from the two fathers. Other characters in the play are Chremes' brother Demipho, who tries to get his son Antipho to dissolve his marriage to Phanium; Nausistrata, Chremes' wife, who punishes her husband when she discovers about his secret affair with Phanium's mother by making her son Phaedria master of the household; Sophrona, former nurse and guardian of Phanium; and Geta, an old slave who is given the task of looking after the two young men while their fathers are away.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good-. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket. A prominent comedic play by Terence (P. Terenti Afri), the Second Century BC Roman playwright. This edition has been prepared for the English-speaking student of Latin. This comedy has been titled by English-speakers as "The Girl from Andros" and is the convoluted story of two young men, the young women they love, and the crafty slave Davus. Likely born in Carthage (in present-day Tunisia), Terence was brought to Rome as a slave where he became educated and excelled at writing comedies. Per Wikipedia, "His plays were heavily used to learn to speak and write in Latin during the Middle Ages and Renaissance Period, and in some instances were imitated by William Shakespeare." With a lengthy introduction and explanatory notes by H. R. Fairclough. An entry in Allyn and Bacon College Latin series. --- In full olive cloth-covered boards with cover titling in black, gilt-stamped spine titling. --- With prior owner's signature to front free endpaper and her marginalia scattered infrequently in the text, else a tightly-bound, well-preserved copy.; 12mo - 7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; lxxxi, 186, [2, ads] pages.

Añadir al carritoDecorative Cloth. Condición: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. This 128-page, 4 1/2" X 6 1/2" offering in G condition is Adelphi by Terence, with Notes and Introductions by Rev. A. Sloman, published by The Clarendon Press, at Oxford, in 1936. Not an ex-library copy, this offering has seen a great deal of use in between its birth in England until its alighting in Ohio. Its front loose end page is missing, there is modest yellowing of the endpapers front and back as well as the pages of text, noticeable shelf wear is visible down the length of volume's spine as well as along bottom edge of front cover board, and a previous owner/student has very neatly printed her name, in white letters, across part of the top, inside edge of the back cover board. ALSO, there are copious notes, the vast majority of which seem to be done in pencil, throughout most of the play part of the text. The PLAY ITSELF, which is PRINTED IN LATIN, is executed in five Acts, and revolves around the "battle" between the child-rearing philosophies of two brothers, Micio and Demea. Micio believes that the fullest liberty possible should be accorded a child while they're growing up, that being the only way to gain the confidence and love of said child. Demea, in contrast, believes that the most rigid discipline possible is the path to producing a young adult ready to assume the duties and responsibilities of maintaining an ordered, law-abiding society. You can probably deduce the outcome of the brothers' labors in child-rearing, but you might want to look into this slender offering to see if you're correct. THE REAL STARS of this volume are Rev. Sloman's Introduction, which is actually a meticulously researched, incredibly detailed, yet relatively brief history of the Roman Theater from its earliest known origins, including a bio of our play's author, Terence, and the Reverend's Notes, covering each scene in each act, which, in the same patient detail, interpret and explain what's happening. Terence, by the way, was Greek-born, was captured and became a Roman slave, only to be eventually granted his freedom due to his proclivity for scholarly learning, and a clever, but always respectful, tongue.Thank you very much!!
