"I'm not like them," Tennessee Reed would tell her teachers to get them to see that the approach they used for students with "normal" brains didn't always work for her. As it turned out, she was different in quite a few other ways as well, including the great reserves of courage she could call upon to fight an educational system that often defined her disabilities as laziness or stupidity. The daughter of writer/choreographer Carla Blank and novelist Ishmael Reed, Tennessee was diagnosed at an early age with several language-based learning disorders. The bottom line, the experts agreed, was that she would never read or write. Within a few years, however, she published her first book of poetry. By the time she was a teenager, she was writing the text for Meredith Monk performances and traveling the world to read her poems. Spell Albuquerque is an inspiring memoir of one woman's struggle to overcome racism and institutional authority and to achieve what everyone said was impossible. Signed by Author(s).…

Simon Ortiz "Not only do Tennessee Reed's refreshing poems concern themselves with a range of concerns--from global travel, and the stunning achievements of Bessie Coleman, black aviation pioneer, to global warfare, the misuse of hi-technology, and an ageless fascination with the aging process itself. This young, gifted poet writes with clarity, wit and wonder, and with an open hearted passion that disarms, refreshes, and delights." Al Young. Signed by Author(s).…

Soft cover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. 1st Edition. As a result of a learning disability, Dakota struggled to get through her undergraduate years, but came through school with flying colors. But as she began her employment career, her troubles began. First she was assigned to a mentor named Valerie whose idea of mentoring was to come to the class ten minutes before class ended. Dakota's students were older than she and took advantage of the difference by harassing her and ridiculing her. She finally quit the teaching profession when the authorities confessed they couldn't keep the students from assaulting professors. At her next job, her boss was a paraplegic who ran a cent for independent living with a strong hand. She had all of the charm of an Ahab and because she was physically disabled, she felt superior to those whose disabilities were invisible. Like those writers who've used levity and iron to make serious points, Jill Nelson, Alice Randall, Sola Agusston and Adrienne Kennedy, Tennessee Reed uses her Brueghelian gufts for descriptions of major and minor characters. She's armed with a wit that imparts a black humor, and a craftsperson's sense of scene, to create one of the most remarkable novels to come along in years. Signed by Author(s).…
