Hardback. Condición: Good. A rip-roaring puzzle box of an adventure about grit, guts, and gold, from Elinor Teele, the acclaimed author of The Mechanical Mind of John Coggin. The small, run-down town of Eden is the only place Jenny Burns has ever called home. The roots of the trees are in her bones, the air of the mountains is in her breath, the lakes and rivers are in her blood. And that's why, when her father loses his job and tells Jenny that they may have to move on from Eden, she knows she can't let that happen. The fever of New Zealand's gold rush still runs in the veins of Eden, and everyone knows the legend of Doc Magee: how he found the largest gold nugget anyone had ever seen and hid it somewhere in the hills before he disappeared. Jenny and her best friend, Pandora, know that if they can find the gold, it'll solve all their problems. But the way is fraught with mysteries, riddles, and danger--and those are just the threats they know about. Before her quest is over, Jenny will have to face challenges from within as well as from without. To save her town, she'll have to solve a puzzle bigger than she ever imagined. A Legendary Treasure Hunt: Jenny Burns must follow the trail of the eccentric Doc Magee and find his legendary hidden gold before her family is forced to leave Eden, the only home she's ever known. A Brainy Best Friend Duo: With her relentlessly logical best friend Pandora by her side, Jenny must unravel a series of brain-twisting puzzles left behind by a mad genius. Riddles and Puzzles: Follow a series of cryptic clues hidden within a human skeleton, a book of anatomy, and the very mountains themselves. Rich Historical Setting: Step into the rugged world of the 1870s New Zealand gold rush, filled with eccentric characters, forgotten legends, and long-buried secrets.…

Hardback. Condición: Very Good. The important political motivations behind why women finally won the right to voteIn the 1880s, women were barred from voting in all national-level elections, but by 1920 they were going to the polls in nearly thirty countries. What caused this massive change? Why did male politicians agree to extend voting rights to women? Contrary to conventional wisdom, it was not because of progressive ideas about women or suffragists? pluck. In most countries, elected politicians fiercely resisted enfranchising women, preferring to extend such rights only when it seemed electorally prudent and in fact necessary to do so. Through a careful examination of the tumultuous path to women?s political inclusion in the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, Forging the Franchise demonstrates that the formation of a broad movement across social divides, and strategic alliances with political parties in competitive electoral conditions, provided the leverage that ultimately transformed women into voters. As Dawn Teele shows, in competitive environments, politicians had incentives to seek out new sources of electoral influence. A broad-based suffrage movement could reinforce those incentives by providing information about women?s preferences, and an infrastructure with which to mobilize future female voters. At the same time that politicians wanted to enfranchise women who were likely to support their party, suffragists also wanted to enfranchise women whose political preferences were similar to theirs. In contexts where political rifts were too deep, suffragists who were in favor of the vote in principle mobilized against their own political emancipation.Exploring tensions between elected leaders and suffragists and the uncertainty surrounding women as an electoral group, Forging the Franchise sheds new light on the strategic reasons behind women?s enfranchisement.…
