Staplebound. Condición: Good. Staplebound. Offered here is a collection of 97 issues covering a decade of the landmark sapphic magazine Lesbian Connection, the longest-running periodical for lesbians in the United States. Founded in 1974 by the lesbian-feminist collective Ambitious Amazons, led by Margy Lesher, in order "to address the lack of safe, reliable, and targeted information channels for lesbian groups and individuals," Lesbian Connection is an award-winning and influential American grassroots network forum publication "for, by and about lesbians," with a focus on content submitted by its readers. This collection, covering 97 issues capturing the early aughts era (1999-2009, its peak circulation) of Lesbian Connection bear the address labels and come from the personal library of the late Florida-based influential Jewish lesbian feminist, theorist, activist, and Women's Studies professor Dr. Bette S. Tallen (1950-2023), ephemera gained in her decades of activism and scholarship in higher education and in community for LGBTQ+ liberation, women's rights, and intersectional feminism. These 97 issues of Lesbian Connection span from 1999 to 2009 and hold letters and responses about issues as varied as September 11th, transgender affirmation, marriage equality, a lesbian baby boom, same-sex domestic violence, polyamory, Rosie O'Donnell's coming out, unionizing, butch identity, where to get African American lesbian books, croning ceremonies, and obituaries that honored lesbians throughout the community (such as vegan ecofeminist activist scholar Marti Kheel, author of Nature Ethics); a "Directory of Contact Dykes," subscribers who have volunteered to be listed to provide information about their areas to traveling lesbians and new women in town; directories of lesbian-recommended stores (like Charis Books & More or Herland: The Wanderground), safe places to live and travel, publications, and workshops, retreats, a Lesbian Connection Logo Contest, and groups like the Lesbian Teachers' Network, June Mazer's Lesbian Archives, Lesbians in the Visual Arts, and The National Organization for Lesbians of Size (NOLOSE); festival schedules and advertisements for events like Southern Womyn's Festival in Florida, Dyke Carpentry Campout near New Orleans, Sounds & Furies: Economical Women's Magical Tours, Provincetown Women's Week, and Sisters in a Strange Land: A Retreat for Christian Lesbians in Michigan; recommendations for books (like The Queer Parent's Primer), music, videos, and websites (Rainbow Law dot com); along with emerging subjects like "Lesbians & Land," advertising rural lesbian publications and alternative communities, Alison Bechdel's Dykes to Watch Out For comic strips, a crossword puzzle, and more, together forming a vivid and lively look at the lesbian community through the first decade of a new century in print and periodical, with meaningfully relevant provenance. The Origin: "From our travels, we realized there were women all over doing things. They were starting bookstores and starting to publish books and records. Lesbian albums had just started coming out, and I figured it was great to have all these things, but if lesbians didn't know about them, they were never going to succeed." - Margy Lesher, cofounder and executive director of Lesbian Connection. The Legacy: "[LC]'s not monitored in a way that squelches debate or anger or opinions, and so it's just so lively and real, and I think that's kind of unusual and amazing that there's so much tolerance for diversity and conflict. It's so much fun." - Nancy Monahan, contributing editor of Lesbian Connection and co-author with Rosemary Keefe Curb of Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence. The Relevance: "As Lesbian Connection embarks on its second half-century, those behind the magazine say its mission is more important now than ever, especially with a second Trump presidency on the horizon. [Nancy] Manahan said she hopes younger readers subscribe to the magazine to arm themselves with knowledge for the new era of politics our country is about to enter." - Ellie Rudy for NBC News online, "Lesbian Connection: How a grassroots magazine shaped generations of queer women," Dec. 9, 2024. 9.75" X 7". 42pp-66pp each. Staplebound printed wraps. Moderate edgewear, with soiling, occasional hard lean to spine, creasing, toning, and foxing to most issues.
